Rabies Shot Is it ok for Angel to get the rabies shot a week and a half after taking Sentinel (she was given it on Jul. 12)? She was also given Surolan eardrops from July 4-18 for a yeast infection. TCC and I will be taking her to the vet's this Fri. to have her ears rechecked. I don't want too many drugs in her system at once and want to know if it would be safe for her to get the rabies shot this Fri. if her ears are ok. I was originally thinking about booking an appointment for the rabies shot the following week to give her a rest from the drugs. Also, is it ok to give her a bath the same day or week as the shot? We bathe her every 2 weeks and her next bath time would be next weekend.

Check with your vet ---the real expert!!!!!! My vet is totally in charge of my dogs shots, etc. And - I have never had a problem over many years with many pets. **** Can't see how a bath would make any difference..... Carol Jean

Yup I'd have to let the Vet decide that.

I was wondering about the bathing because when Angel got microchipped by the breeders, they said not to bathe her for 2 weeks to let the sore spot heal.

I'd wait I'd wait for the rabies shot. Her immune system is still low if she was fighting a yeast infection. The rabies shot is a tough shot on their system. I'd wait. suzie

When you give a rabies shot, their immune system overcomes the vaccination thereby giving them immunity. I would make sure any of my dogs were 100% healthy before giving a vaccination (especially rabies) and not overload their immune system. It is this reason why they suggest never giving the parvo combo shot with the rabies because it is just too much for the immune system to overcome. They recommend waiting at least 3 weeks in between shots to let the immune system recover first.

If the vet says she no longer has a yeast infection in her ears tomorrow at our visit, would it be ok for her to get the rabies shot sometime next week? I wouldn't do more than 1 shot at once. After the rabies shot, she doesn't need anymore shots until her 1 year booster, which will be in Jan/07. Thanks.

Well, the vet said her ears are clear of infection now but there was some wax. She said Angel could get the rabies shot anytime. I think I'm going to wait until August just to be safe.

| you can give her a bath, just be sure you're gentle and extra careful when scrubbing the area where she got her shot. It might be a little sensitive for a day or two, just like when we get shots.

| Angel got her first rabies shot on Mon. at almost 8 months old. She seems to be acting her normal self. When should she get her next one? I believe in a reduced vaccination schedule due to my breeder informing me of side effects and doing research. My breeders believe the rabies shot is optional (even though it's required by law where I live) because of the side effects and them being housedogs. When I called my vet's office to schedule the appointment, the receptionist said the shot is done every 2 years. When I spoke to the vet, she said the first shot is only good for 1 year and then it can be done every 2 years after the 2nd one. She said it isn't effective if I wait 2 years for the 2nd one and a titer test will show this result. Can you tell me why it isn't effective? When have you gotten your Yorkies' 2nd rabies shot? | Studies are currently underway (and already have been done in Europe) to show that rabies shots are effective for way more then 2 years. From my reserach, I believe 1 shot is only needed in the life if a dog but that is my opinion. 2years...I don't believe in that. You can research online and find that 29..or 28 states have admitted that vaccines are not needed that often BUT to appease the veterinary practices they have said you need them every 3 years. You don't "need" them every 3 years BUT they were trying to strike a compromise so that vets do not lose so much money. I have the article here somewhere and it is online. Rabies is one of the toughest shots with the most side effects (although some are hard to prove). Seizures have happened to a lot of my pet friends after this shot. :-( suzie |
