Need Reassurance Muffin went into her first heat season and although successful, keeping these two apart has been quite THE task! During this time, Buscuit has turned into a monster with nothing but Muffin on the brain and Muffin a little bloody stink bomb! Well, these past few weeks have been quite an eye opener! That being said, after my Muffin had a bad side effect after being put to sleep for her teeth pulling a few months ago to the point of almost loosing her, I have been beating myself up over weather or not to go forward with spaying and neutering because of the usage of anesthesia. The whole anesthesia thing just scares me in that I will loose one or both of my furbabies. My Vet has assured me that I have "Very Little" (not exactly the words I want to hear right now) to worry about. But, still I'm worried sick...

| I had the same kind of fear before I had mine done. we made it through the first heat. (like to have drove me to drink!) and almost made it thru the second heat. we had 4 beautiful puppies out of that mistake. They have all been spayed and neutered as of yesterday the last one was done. I don't want to go thru that again. (the heat cycles I mean). they all did fine and actually improved Buckeye's attitude. He acts younger. I am glad we had them all done. I am sure yours will do just fine. I know it is a worry but it really is better to get it done. Good luck.

I think your concern is valid. If Muffin has already had a bad reaction to anesthesia, what are they planning on doing differently to prevent this? Was their a medical problem that has now been cured? Are they going to use a different anesthesia? Did you have the preop blood tests performed last time? Did they show anything? I feel if she had one bad reaction then it is very possible that she will have another. I would definitely gather information on anesthesia and have a discussion with the vet.

Thank you ever so much for your insights! Since relocating to Virginia, I had only been to this Vet only once for what I thought to be a broken leg. So, I guess I didn't give this new Vet a fair chance. I took my concerns to their office today and was referred to an affiliate office that specializes in small breeds. They even afforded me what I feel to be a MAJOR discount on the procedures at $110 for both! I am still very nervous and concerned; but I know that for me that I am doing the right thing - Especially, after going through the fiasco of Muffin's first season! However, knowing that I am taking my furbabies to small breed specialists is some what relieving. I will keep you posted... And, again thanks!

Anesthesia is scary, but you will be far better off in the hands of a vet experienced with small breeds. Pay the extra for the preop blood tests and make sure they use a safe anesthesia, like isoflurane gas or sevoflorane and no barbituate preanesthetic. The blood test results are very important.
