| I feel terrible, am I a bad mom? Four days ago, Stomper started cyring/barking all night long. He ususally goes to sleep at 8:30 PM and wakes up around 5:30 AM. For the last 4 days, he cries and barks all night. All night! We couldn't handle it anymore since we both work and Stomper is in our bedroom in a crate. I can't believe how noisy that little guy can be! Anyhow, after 4 nights and only about 15 hours of sleep, I called three vets and my trainer (also got advice from one Yorkie Talk member!). Most told me to ignore him (don't say anything at all) because it is a behavior problem and he is trying to get my attention. As you can imagine, it is so hard to do when you need to sleep. FYI...we both wear ear plugs too...doesn't help at all. Anyhow, since our house (hardwood floors - you hear everything!) is so small and we end up saying "NO" when we shouldn't say anything to him at all, we put him in the garage last night for the first time. Both the trainer and the vet said he needs to learn who is boss. If that means he needs to be alone in the garage to get the picture, you need to do it and be consistent. I feel so so so sad. It breaks my heart, but I also have to sleep. He didn't poop or pee in his crate, he was so happy to see me and acted like his regular self this morning. I just feel like a terrible person at the moment, but they told me I need to do it for at least a week before allowing him to come back into the house to sleep in the crate on our floor. If he still does it when he comes back in the house, they said to put him back out. Eventually he will learn I hope the little guy learns quickly because it is breaking my heart! I have tears in my eyes right now. I don't know what else to do, but I feel like such a terrible mommy. Has anyone who crates their yorkie ever experienced this behavior???

| Stomper He does have to learn..and if the garage is not hot or cold, depending where you live, then what can you do..you need sleep...I would let him sleep with me, but not all want a dog in the bed. |

| My husband is totally against him sleeping with us so that is not an option. I guarantee he would sleep just fine if he did sleep with us! The crate is the only way we can go right now until he is on a proper schedule to sleep on a bed or open crate on the floor.

| If he just started doing this then maybe he has something medically wrong with him that's causing him pain at night. I know with my children they always hurt more at night. Not trying to make you feel guilty, but it's strange he just started doing it. My pup cried from the first night we got him for 2 weeks when we put him in a crate. My husband goes to bed at 9:00PM and gets up at 2:AM. When he finally did settle down for bed, he'd start wailing again at 2:00AM when my husband got up. I decided just to let him sleep with us. It was better for our situation and now I look forward to him sleeping with me. My husband was against dogs sleeping with us and none ever have. He's the one that suggested it. Does your husband know they don't shed? Last edited by Ringo; 04-22-2005 at 03:49 AM. |

| Been there, done that!! I did the same thing when I was crate training (which did not work for me) put her in the garage. Felt bad and I kept trying to tell my self "its just a dog its not cruel" But anyway, I gave up the crate cause she loved to bathe herself in her own feces and urine, I guess anyway. Good luck and sleep tight!! |

| He knows they don't shed, but he does not feel comfortable with a dog in the bed with us. I don't mind, but I have no choice but to understand my husband's feelings about it.

| LOL.. sorry but your husband is lucky . Jerry had expressed before I got Bridget that he would not have a dog in the bed with us . First night and a little push from Bridget is all he needed and she has been sleeping between us since. Now with the new addition (sorry still thinking of a name) we have two in our bed with us. Funny thing they never whine when with us, I guess it helped making the transition from being wth mommy and litter mates, to sleep with us right away...lol spoiled dogs for sure

| I've only had Rylee for 2 weeks now, the first nights she cried, I'd take her to her potty, she'd go back to sleep. Then about a week later, early this week, she started crying for long periods. I did the pennies in a can thing. Needless to say, she's doesn't cry in her crate anymore. I just gently shook it three times and firmly said "NO!"

| Now, I sleep all night and she doesn't start to cry until we wake in the morning. She's such a good girl.

| yes...I have been suffering with this...I just got Silk a couple of months ago and she wakes up at like 3am, 4am, or 5am... I never thought of the garage...thanks for the suggestion... I'll have to try that tonight...I would like to sleep in at least one day till 6am. Problems is the last time I ignored her she pooped and peed in her crate... but I have started to remove the food around 7 or 8 pm so she can adjust her potty time. |
