| Color of Blood in vomit and Stool Can anyone tell me what color is the blood if a pup vomits and/or in thier stool? I took zoe to the vet thinking that I saw blood in his vomit (he vomited 6 times) It was brown acid and I thought I saw blood flakes. I took him to an emergency vet and he said that vomiting blood would look like coffee grains and blood in stool would be pitch black. Is this true? Keep in mind that my pup just had knee surgery for a luxating patella on friday. He's on anitbiotics (amoxicillan(sp)) and rimadyl. I am not giving him any meds tonight and taking him off the rimadyl unless he shows that he is in pain. Then...when I got home he went to the bathroom and to me the stool looked black. I will check on his morning stool sample to determine how black it is but I just wanted to know if what the vet said about the coloring of stool is true. Thanks! Any advice would be appreciated.

| blood The color of the blood would be determined by the problem...a dog can have a black stool from hookworms or internal bleeding..but if it is from a stomach upset, the blood is usually red, or pinkish and mixed with mucus as a rule.. Knee surgery does not cause internal bleeding..injury or disease can cause internal blood loss. Brown vomit is a common color..good luck |

| the color of blood is determined by where in the digestive system the bleeding is occurring. For example if the bleeding is in the duodenum (1st part of small intestine) the stools will be black because the blood is digested and will turn black. If the bleeding is in the lower part of the colon or near the rectum the stools will have bright red blood in them. Also the reverse is true if the dog is vomiting blood that has been in the stomach, it will look like coffee grounds because it has started to break down from the HCl in the stomach, but if the dog is vomiting and then you see red blood it could be from a broken blood vessel in the esophagus from violent vomiting. The meds could be the cause, especially Rimadyl, if Zoe isn't eating much. Sorry if this sounds too technical but the same is true for humans and I'm a nurse . Good luck with Zoe. |

| Blood that comes from the stomach or higher up in the colon is dark or black by the time the puppy (or a person) goes to the bathroom. Blood from lower in the colon and rectum is still red. (People with bright red blood in their stools - are usually bleeding from hemorrhoids -- which are very low in the rectal area). **** The longer blood is out of a vein or artery - the more coagulated (thickened) it becomes and the darker it becomes. ---------- If blood sits in the stomach for a while - it will become thickened and very dark (as you said, it could resemble coffee grounds). However, fresh new blood that has entered the stomach could still be red when thrown up. ----------- You can even see this with cuts on the outside of your body. If you have a cut on your arm, the bleeding will at first be very thin and very red.... but soon, it will begin to coagulate/thicken (this is what eventually stops the bleeding and even forms a scab) and as this occurs, it will become much darker in color. This same thickening and color change occurs inside our body. (The longer the blood is in our body - before we go to the bathroom or throw up - the darker and thicker it will become......and if it spends a long time in the colon moving along before we go to the bathroom - it certainly will be very dark and almost black. ) I feel like I rambled a little - but hope this helps.
