| First whelping is when she is ready to deliver her pups. usually its 63 days. She will start to make a bed when its closer to time. The bitch can go 65 to 68 days. the best sign is her temp will dropa few days before she is due. her normal temp is 100-102 but within 24 hours of birth her temp will drop to 99 the pups within 24 hours. another sign the bitch will lay on her side for about 12 hours.she is getting the puppies in position to be born.At this time there is usually a clear discharge from the vigina, If the discharge is black, green or brown, a vet should be called immediately. sometimes 12 hours before birth a dog will refuse food.at the sametime she will make a bed tearing newspapers or rugs, pillows . she is making a nest. within a few hours of birth she will begin panting hardshe should be watched very close. You really need to try hard to find someone that lives closely to help that has had pups. beings your male is so much biogger than your female she may need a c-section. it's good you are taking her to the vet, they will know.shes awfully young. We usually dont breed our dogs till there 2yrs old. Good luck and i will be praying.

I just called the vet because my little girl threw up but they said not to worry....sometimes dogs do that. If she throws up again in the next 24 hours I need to take her in. Hopefully it's nothing and she'll be ok. This is a lot to deal with. I have a new found respect for breeders...

I didn't plan on her getting pregnant for atleast another year (around 2 or so) but it just kinda happened. My male is a little horndog (aren't all males though...even human ones lol). He still tried humping her even though she's pregnant. Actually he hasnt done that since she got pregnant but all of a sudden he started trying again a few days ago. Im having to keep them seperate for the most part. If she has to have a c-section, will that cause more stress on her or the puppies?

| [QUOTE=HeatherHamptons]Hi everyone, I came across this board while doing a search today. I have 2 yorkies (Prince and Angel). Prince is a litte under 9 pounds and Angel is 6 pounds....and pregnant.........................................} I have a book at home that gives you a list of supplies you will need, and will also give you information on signs of possible trouble during the whelping. I am at work now, but I will find the book at home tonight and send you the name of the book (you can order it off of Amazon.com) and they can mail it to you in two to three days. In the mean time, I will send you the list of supplies you will need to have on hand. This book is all about Yorkies, and has a chapter on breeding and whelping |

Hope everything is going Ok. Of course your Vet is your best source, but you might like to read up on yorkies and whelping and this book can give you something to go by after you talk to your Vet. The name of the book is "The Yorkshsire Terrier Today". Be sure and let us all know when the babies are here.

| whelping Your girl is going to be fine. I have only lost one mommy in 33 yrs..and that was back in the old days before they had Isflorene for a c-section. Make her a bed..I like rubbermaid bins. Heating pad goes under the box, towel inside. I am an old time breeder, so some of the things I use might seen out of date to younger breeders..but I do change my ways if it dosn't work for me and what I do has worked for a long time with good results. PM me any time or email direct...Primyork@aol.com I sent you a name of a VA breeder who will advise you if you email her...best wishes |

| whelping I don't think whelping mortality is a common event. It does happen, but I know so many breeders and most have never lost a mommy. If I lost 3 bitches in 2 yrs I would need to have some answers.....Sandy Lemire wrote a great book about bacterial infections...she had a problem with them..lost dogs and litters. Form, Function and Fancy by Sandy Lemire. Best wishes to your mentor |
