Im new here....and also can use some advice! Hi everyone, I came across this board while doing a search today. I have 2 yorkies (Prince and Angel). Prince is a litte under 9 pounds and Angel is 6 pounds....and pregnant. It wasn't my intention to breed her yet, it just sorta happened. She went into heat and my male tore her diaper off and "got ahold of her".............serveral times. She's now got a round belly and is 45 days along. She's also very young which worries me. She wont even be a year old until June (and she's due in in May). I set an appointment with the vet for this Monday to get her an exam and an X-Ray, but I am still confused. I've never bred a dog or been around one having puppies. What do I expect? Is there anything I need to buy or have ready? Will she need any help with delivering? What about temperment, does that change? Any advice you all can give would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks in advance........ |
Hi Heather and welcome to you, Prince and Angel! Oh, boy! Puppies on the way. I am not a breeder but this question comes up a lot on here and there are lots of older threads with info on how to learn about whelping. Most will recommend that you find a yorkie breeder to mentor you and you need to do it quickly since you don't have much time to prepare. There is really a lot to consider and you would be overwhelmed I think without the help and advice of an experienced breeder. There are books you can read as well and I am sure you can get good advice from the breeders here. Look for posts by whispersmom2 or YorkieRose for example or PM them. Thay are always willing to help a newbie who has had an "accidental" breeding. You are not alone and you came to the right place. Good luck! |
Thanks for the kind welcome. It's much appreciated! I am already overwhlemed lol. I only want the best for my little girl and her babies. I am not sure where to find a breeder who can help. At the risk of sounding VERY arrogant, what is whelping? Im sooo clueless... |
Welcome to YT Heather, Angel and Prince. I imagine how nervous you most be. I will definetely try to get help from an expert. A breeder and the vet will be the best bet to help. Good luck. My Gucci is in her first "heat" now, and she is only 9 months. My relatives and neighbor keep telling me to take her to mate her. But i dont want too, she is still young and im not prepare for a pregnacy, etc. People thi :dog: nk is simple but I have learn on here that is not. Im sorry Im not of any help for you in this situation. I will pray that everything goes well for Angel. Good luck. Please keep us posted. |
Yes, I am very nervous. I want to do everything right but right now, I have no CLUE what I am doing. This all just kinda...happened. Im trying to search for reading material on yorkie borths but I am not finding to much. Im not sure what to do :( |
I agree, try to find an experienced toy dog breeder in your area. Maybe get a reference from your vet. I'm sure you must be overwhelmed by all this. But welcome to the forum. We do have some great breeders here as well ;) |
Hello Aimee, VERY overwhelmed is more like it lol. Im trying to find breeders near me but so far no luck. I live in the middle of nowhere....literally, and the vet, well, this is the first time I am meeting her (monday). I just moved here so I haven't switched vets, doctors, pediatricians, etc. Im so worried about Angel since she's so young. |

Here is a list of breeders in Virginia from the YTCA web page. I don't think it could hurt to try to contact one if you see one that is relatively close http://www.ytca.org/breeder3.html#VA |
Hello and welcome to u and Angel and Prince! Just wanted to wish you luck with Angel, hope she has a trouble free delivery. Heres a site that I found has lots of info on what to do and expect, which was posted by someone else a while back. Read through it...it is great. http://www.petbitsforyou.com/ |
Everyone here has given good advice. Find someone who can help you out. With your male being bigger than your female, there's a chance that your female might need a c-section. Your vet will probably go over all of that with you. I'm sure your vet can give you some info on whelping and what to do to help (if you female needs help). Good luck. |
I was just reading over a site I found about yorkie births and not im completely freaked out. I realize this woman was being realistic that things could happen but now im worried. She said "be prepaired to lose the babies as well as the mom". Is the mom dying, common? Im gonna call the vet and see what advice she can give me for taking care of her during her pregnancy and birth. Thanks for the links. I will check into them as soon as I get off the phone with the vet. |

That's the site I was reading. The one that mentioned losing the mother. I don't know if I can handle this. Obviously there's no turing back now, but I don't know what the hell I am doing. I am so clueless. |
Oh gosh!! Try not to worry, and see that vet! She'll be able to tell if a c-section is needed, and your mommy dog will do the rest. Good luck to both of you. |
