| When is typical first heat? We want to have Bailey spayed before her first heat. But we want to wait as long as possible, though - just for her to get as big as possible before the surgery. She's not tiny - weighs 3lb 8oz at 14 weeks - but I'm guessing every possible additional ounce would be beneficial. We've been planning to scheduling her for some time around her 5 month birthday, but if it would be pretty safe to wait another month I'd feel a lot better about it. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I think any time after 6 months. I waited too long and CAli came into heat at 8 1/2 months.

| Everything I've ever seen has said wait until 6 months - that way any baby teeth that are still retained can be removed. Think they go into heat around 7 or 8 months. My little girl was about the same size at that age and she was spayed at 6 months.

| I too have always heard to wait until they are at least 6 months...and with these small babies, it is best to wait even longer. My little girl is 11 months and going through her first heat.

| Tasha was 8 months and Jersey was 1. Most small dogs come into heat later than large breed dogs. I will say this too..alot of times their first heat can be really mild and almost missed or even missed in some occassions. Jersey's first heat was really mild and I almost missed it..she hardly bled and swelled..
