| Not Spaying??? Are there any of you out there that have un-spayed/un-neutered dogs? What are the pros and cons? I'm having mixed feelings......

| I have one male and one female that is not neutered/spayed and one female that is spayed. The male won't be spayed, I will be breeding him and the female I am not sure yet whether or not she will be spayed. I would have to say that if you are not going to be breeding them, then they should be spayed/neutered. Here are a few pros and cons, there are so many, but overall the pros for having a neutered/spayed dog are much better and outweigh the cons for having a unspayed/un-neutered dog. Cons of having a male that is not neutered consist of marking and peeing on everything, humping, can develop cancer due to not be neutered or bred, may have some aggression, territorial to other dogs, if a female is in heat he will try to get to her and run from you. Cons of having an unspayed female consist of blood on floor, constant licking, all male dogs will be attracted to her, she will try to run away when she is in heat, tend to be snappy or grumpy through the whole thing, risk of developing cancer is high because she is not bred or spayed. Pros of a neutered male are he will be more loving, possibly no marking, no humping, the risk of cancer developing decreases dramatically, no aggressive or territorial behaviors that are induced by intact male dogs, will be more playful rather than trying to get to a female. Pros of a spayed female are no blood or stains, no sneaking out or running away to find a male, mood is much better, risk of developing cancer dramatically decreases, you can now take her with you without worrying about male dogs trying to get to her, no chances of unplanned or accidental pregnancies. I hope this helped!!

| With males the chance of developing cancer due to not being neutered is slim. The aggression can be much worse if they aren't fixed. My Yorkie is very lovable and he isn't fixed. I do think that is varies from dog to dog. My grandmothers dog isn't fixed and man he is just awful. He still pees in the house and he has become VERY aggressive. My dog marks(outside) but is house broken and isn't aggressive. But she is right there are pros and cons to it all. Good luck Michelle |

| I'm also really worried because Brownie's so small and I've heard horror stories about pups not coming out of the operating room. I think it's just mommy jitters???

Dont worry I am right there with you. Im so scared becuase of all the bad stories I have heard that I havent had chloe fixed yet since she is full grown and right under 3 lbs. I do plan on it though. Hopefully soon, but it does seem scary. Im sure its not near as bad as we have worked it up in our heads to be.

| It is always a risk Especially the small tiny ones..but if you don't care too much about caring for your girl in heat or ...if they are primarily inside dogs and aren't going to sneak out then you have to weigh your options. I would definately make sure whomever does the spay/nueter has worked alot with small dogs. I can't really say what you should do because I also have heard of yorkies dying after a spay...not so sure about nueters even on YT. My Aunt's Corgie died a couple days after she got spayed( she was 7yrs old)and that was such a tragic loss to my aunt. IT was terrible but then again so many of them go right..you might want to check the statistics out on nueter, maybe it is not as dangerous as a spay?? I am not sure if you could have massive internal bleeding in the testes as you could in the female internal organs?Good luck on your descision.

| Brownie is an inside dog, she only goes out for "walks" with me in my frontpack or in my handbag. She will only walk a block by herself at the most, lol. There is no possibility of any males around her when she's in heat and that's why it's so difficult for me to go through with this spay. She also wears panties while she's in heat so it doesn't ruin my furniture. So, this all being said, is the spay still necessary??

| i think so only because if not spayed female dogs have a much higher risk of cancer.

| Plus - both male and female dogs that are spayed and neutered are much more content --- males want to breed all the time and females have times when they very much instinctively want to breed. Being spayed and neutered keeps them from going through these unnecessary yearnings (shall we call them that!). Especially males........ And - as so many have previously mentioned -- both male and female dogs that have been neutered and spayed are much less likely to have health problems (especially cancer)...... So - for those of us who are not going to breed our dogs - it is really the right thing to do. As far as being afraid to do it -- this is a time when you need to sit down and talk to your vet and voice your concerns. I know we have all heard incidents where dogs have died during the procedure......but I can tell you that my vet's office (three vets) have performed some 1500 spays and neuters and has never lost a pet. Let your vet talk with you about this. Really, he is the expert -- not those of us on YT. Good luck! Carol Jean |
