| A worried mommy So I scheduled Zoe to get neutered this friday and I am a nervous wreck. I hassled my vet so much today that he told me to go elsewhere for the surgery, I didn't. He notified me that there's always a risk in sugery but they they will do their best. He's getting neutered and 2 extractions. I CAN'T STAND IT. why if he never wakes up? Will he get mad at me? WIll he be the cute rambunctous puppy that he is? He is my life and I cann't have anything happen to him. What do I do?

| I know that you are worry, but i think he will be ok. My Gucci had two surgeries, one to get her spayed and extracts 4 teeth, and one to repair a hernia. She did very well. I will have your little guy in my prayers. Please keep us posted. |

| For anesthesia make sure your vet use either servo or isoflurane b/c it works best for the smaller bread. Keep us posted.

| Okay, first I want to say maybe you should find another vet. Part of their job is to reassure you that your dog is in good hands. Secondly, don't worry. Dogs as small as yours get fixed everyday. Lola was spayed on Friday. Not just spayed, but she had eighteen extractions and she was microchipped. I was a nervous wreck too. She was out of it for a couple days, but now she is pretty much back to normal. By the way Lola is only 2lbs 10 ozs. Your little one will be fine. Keep us posted.

| Remmy just had MAJOR surgery to remove bladder stones. I was so unhappy with my vet I told her that I wanted Remmy to see a specialist for the surgery. I paid more but I did not have confidence in my vet. Your vet should be telling you everything will be fine not to find another vet. He does not sound very empathetic to me. Remmy is doing great now and no complications. Don't worry but go with your gut on your vet. |

Of course, anesthesia is always a risk and we are going to worry no matter how much we trust our vet. Many Yorkies go through this everyday and many breeders are now opting to sterilize at 8 weeks, rather than trusting the new owners to have it performed. Every heat cycle she goes through you are risking pyrometra which can be fatal. Also the earlier a female is spayed the greater the health benefits. It is preferable to have them spayed before the first heat, but you still get health benefits no matter what age so don't delay, if you don't plan on breeding. | |

| I know how you feel! OMG, I am going through the same thing right now - I literally just booked Oscar's appointment for next thursday. I booked three appointments - first one in wednesday evening to have pre-op blood work done to make sure he is in good health, then I drop him off on thursday morning (that's the worst part, leaving him there), I pick him up that night (I refuse to leave him there when no one will even be there), and then I take him back first thing friday morning for post-op check up. I am sooo scared for him, feeling all the same things you are (what if something goes wrong, what if he doesn't wake up, etc. etc.). He's just a little guy, not even 3 lbs....

| First of all, I want to applaud you guys for having the guts to do what I have been too chicken to do. Nikko is a year old and I still haven't had him neutered for the same reasons you guys are worried about. I worry about putting him under and complications that may arise. I also have hubby fighting me tooth and nail by making it his personal mission to protect Nikko's "manhood." I guess its a guy thing. Sorry I can't be much help but I want you all to know that your little ones will be in my prayers and I am sure everything will be fine. Good luck!!

| I just scheduled Gypsy to get spayed next month. I am already worrying about it. Will need a lot of cyber hand holding when it the day gets here. I am to drop her off about 7 then one of us will pick her up that evening. They recommended it on Friday so I will have more time with her afterwards. My vet is open weekends so I will have someone to call if a problem arises, but I am scared. Good luck I will be thinking of all the pups.

| I got Hobbs fixed about a month and a half ago. I was SOOOO nervous. So, in an attempt to ease my anxiety, I did some research and compiled a list of questions. Then I called the vet and made an appointment to go in and ask him my list of questions. If your vet is not willing to sit down and talk with you, then I agree, you need to find another vet. Just simply talking to the vet really eased my mind. At least after talking to him, he knew who I was, and I felt like he would take really good care of Hobbs. Normally, they require the dogs to stay overnight after a neuter, but the vet let me take Hobbs home, since I was worried about leaving him when no one was going to be there. Like someone already said, make sure they use isoflourine gas. Also ask them what time they will be done with the surgery and call to check on him. I am sure everything will be fine. Hobbs was not even 3 lbs when he got neutered. They said that waht they do is weigh the dog, then plug the weight into the anesthesia machine which automatically administers the anesthesia. So, no worries about them getting too much. Good luck! Let us know how everything turns out. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | ok hopefully this will put some of your fears to rest. I was a vet tech and helped perform countless spays/neuters/dentals/other surgeries on teenie tiny yorkies/chihuahuas/maltese/etc. Every single one came out perfectly fine. Most come out from the anesthesia and within 15 minutes they are back to normal, but sometimes the smaller ones just need to be cuddled alittle more afterwards to help wake up. At the vet i worked for we induced them propoflo which gets injected into their veins, so that they will fall asleep. This is needed to get a trach tube down their throats so the isoflourine can be connected. If a puppy is really hyper and off the wall it will get a tiny injection of a sedative twenty minutes before the propoflo is started. These preop sedatives are done by weight so they won't be getting a huge does of something. They are also connected to a bag of IV fluids. During the shaving and preping for surgery the puppy is connected to a machine that checks pulse, carbon dioxide in the blood, the saturation of oxygen in teh bood, respirations, and also an EKG machine. These machines are also used during the surgery and a tech is most always standing there watching the machines and your puppy to make sure everything is ok. They are only under anesthesia max 30 minutes between the induction, shaving, prepings, surgery, and waking up. the surgery itself usually only lasts 15-20 minutes. Once they are finished with teh surgery, a tech carries them to a cage or wake up area and stays with them until they are sitting up and awake, and the trach tube is pulled. They are usually placed in cages in the treatment room where they can be monitored until they are 100% wake. the likelyhood of your puppy not waking up is very slim because they are constantly watched and every pulse, respiration and line of the EKG is monitored throughout the whole thing. I wouldn't worry about it too much. If its your vet himself that is making you worried then i would find another vet. I am perfectly confident with mine, since i've worked one of one with them, and i trust them completely to do whatever they need to do, no matter what the age or weight of my puppy is. Also, the longer you wait to get a female spayed the more likely she is to develop an infection or breast cancer. Each heat she goes into can cause a problem. After the first two heats the chances of getting breast cancer goes up 50%! then lesser percents after that. Also there is always a chance of getting a pyometra infectino with each one. I've seen both and they are not pretty, especially when they could have been prevented. With males, being neutered or not neutered doesn't give them a greater percentage of getting prostate cancer, but it does increase their chances of getting an prostate infection. Also neutering helps decrease humping, aggression, and cancer if its an undescended testicle. (always get your dog nuetered if they have an undescended testicle) i hope some of this information helped or put some of your fears to rest. if not, at least i got to take a nice 10 minute break from work LOL |
