| Whining during dinner Hi Everyone, I'm new here and have a little problem with 1 yr old Chloe. Her b-day was April 21st and as a little present I decided to give her a tiny bit of wet food mixed with her dry. I stress tiny bit. She loved it and since then I have continued to give her a tiny bit every evening mixed with her dry food. I always wait until after my family has eaten dinner and then I feed her. Well the last 2 nights she has sat under the dinner table staring at me and whining. It took me a while but I realized she was whining for her wet food and she was doing it while we were eating. It was almost like she was saying stop eating and feed me my wet food now. I don't mind giving her a little wet food but I do not want to start a whining episode every night during dinner. She has NEVER been given human food or fed her food my our table. Please help. |

| Remember .... dogs follow a sysyem. So you have taught her that after you guys eat...... then she eats. It's like when I call out "treat treat' ALL my dogs knows what happens next. Your thing now is when you sit to eat... she knows what is coming next. Which is why she is whining...... cause she knows! Can you feed her before you guys eat? When my dogs eat, it is never associated with anytime I eat. It is a completely non connected time. My dogs are soooo well behaved now that I could be on the sofa with ALL my adult dogs with a pizza on my lap.... chowing down..... and they will be napping right next to it. |

| I will try that tonight. This is my first dog and I read book after book before I got Chloe and a lot of them said to always feed them after you eat. What you say makes complete sense. Thank you! |

| I'm thinking that if you just ignore her, it will quit. You could change to giving it to her before you eat. Mine get theirs first thing in the morning. If neither of those work, then I would try playing Dog Whisperer and using your hand like a dogs mouth, nip at her shoulder and ell her quiet or som e other sound. That should make her quiet down and leave you alone. Once she gets to know that means business, you should be able to just say your chosen word and she should quiet down. If all else fails put her into another room when she whines. |

This is great advice!!! I would definately try giving it to her before you eat. But, if she still whines, then most definately ignore her! Never give in by getting up to get her wet food, or she will start to think that SHE is boss! | |

| i'd just ignore it as well. if you stop your meal to feed her because of the whining, she'll learn that that behavior is okay. i always feed my dogs AFTER i eat. reason being, it helps to establish the pack order. the leaders of the pack always eats first. if you feed her first, she'll think that she's above you in the pack, which shouldn't be the case. |

| Oh boy, these little furballs are something else!! I doesn't take long for them to make the connection or see patterns in our behaviors. I have taken to feeding Nikko when I get home from work and then taking him out for a poop walk. He loves going outside so much that when I say "Nikko eat your food" he'll eat one little pebble and rush right to the door and whine!! It is becoming a struggle to get him to eat in the evening because all he wants to do is go outside. But if I feed him after the walk, he'll poop in the house!! My problem is similar to yours I guess, I have to figure out a way of not having him associate food with going outside.
