| Length of Time to Determine Coat Texture The breeders I'm getting my baby girl from says it takes about 6-8 weeks to determine whether a Yorkie will have a soft or silky coat. Is this true? Thanks. |

| And did they say, how one could determine that at 6 to 8 weeks? As far as I know, it's a bit of a guessing game, unless you believe in the eye reflection theory. |

| Maybe breeders can tell earlier but I couldnt tell untill the Adult coat came in about 5 or 6 months old and then you still have some puppy coat in there.

| From what I understand red/orange is cottony or woolly, and green/yellow is silky. Some people don't believe in this theory, others swear by it. Mine both glow green, so we'll have to wait and see. |

| coat Coat texture is a not a pure guessing game. If you have a line of silk, you get silk..most have a bit of soft here and there in the line, but for the most part texture is not a surprise when that parents/grandparents are silk. If you have a silk sire and soft dam etc...then you are have a longer wait to determine... Look at the parents coat..and it is great if you can see the grandparents also/look at the pedigree..that will give you an idea what you are dealing with.. I have never seen a glowing, green eye on a soft coat.. |

| I really think it matters what the grandparents have too and the buyer usually dont see them. Both Chachis parents had a silk coat and he has a cotton coat.

| I knew what type of coat my puppy had by 12 weeks or a little later -- because I had cut off all his puppy hair at that point. The new silky wavy coat that quickly followed his baby hair is still the coat that he has. I think that as long as they are "wearing their baby hair" and have not been trimmed, it is more difficult to discern what their adult coat will be like. Carol Jean |

| I want a girl with a silky coat. The father of my baby girl has a silky coat (I requested that a certain male dog be the sire), and the possible mother of my girl has a soft coat. There are three girls from this breeding. I'm waiting for the breeders to let me know about the babies' coats. Can it take longer than 8 weeks to know which coat the litter will have? The pups will be 8 weeks old this coming Sat. If I don't get a pup from this litter, I'll have to wait for the next one (the mother of the next expected litter has a silky coat). I've been waiting a long time and really want my girl. Last edited by DJ30; 05-07-2006 at 08:17 PM. |

| Toki had very soft frizzy hair as a puppy. He had mats even up to 8 months. After he turned 1 years old he's hair became thick and darker gray. |
