| I don't know if this will help you or not - but this is what I did with Rowdy. He didn't bark at all till he was about 5 months old - then he started barking AT US, anytime he wanted something or wanted attention. I was at my wits end. We were camping in our trailer so the space was limited (meaning not far for him to run to get away). I had his harness on him. So, at my wits end with the barking and not having a clue as to what to do, I thought "what would his mom (canine) do if he were misbehaving". So, at the next bark, I grabbed him by the back of the harness (not roughly but quickly so that it really startled him) and shook him (again, not roughly but firmly enough so that it got his attention) and I said "NO" in a very loud, stern voice. He looked at me like i had lost my mind and ran to my husband and looked back at me with the same look. It was all I could do to not laugh out loud. When he was quiet for a few seconds, then I praised him. It only took me 3 shakes to get him to stop barking at us. Now, I won't say that he never barks, because he does bark at the lab next door, but all I have to do is look at him or say his name and he stops.

| It takes time, but they can be trained to not bark. With our last dog, we had a similar problem...she would get started barking and not stop. We had to train her to 'speak' on command and once we conquered that, we used the same technique to get her to 'quiet' on command. Just using lots of treats and lots of praise. It does take time, but it can be done. |

| Thank to the HIGH HEAVENS my babies are all quiet dogs! I don't know why but I don't have dogs that bark..... maybe cause there are more of them and they don't get bored and crave attention..... who knows but I'm glad anyway! But I heard if you teach a dog to bark..... (speak)... he will associate that as a command. So he will learn the difference between barking and quiet. I've read it a few places. I can't vouch if it will work cause I never had to use it but I wish you good luck! |
