| Oh you know what, I could totally be confusing the Lepto with something else??? Now that you describe what the Lepto was for I do remember hearing that too. I will have to ask which was the Lyme disease protector?? Sorry for the confusion. Can you explain more about the Lepto to me? Sorry or the ignorance on the subject???

| OMG!!!!!!!!!!! I just went to the vet today to get Louie's second set of shots and he got a Lepto vaccine. I am freaking out!! Why shouldn't he get that vaccine? What reactions do they cause. He got it at 10AM today and he has been doing VERY well.

| pspin1975~ If Louie is fine now I am sure that he will not have an adverse reaction. Sometime last week there was a post about a puppy that had an awful reaction to the Lepto shot. If you read that post labeled "really scared..." you can see what happened. Does anyone know the outcome of that post? I hope that little guy was OK! My vet did say that she suggests that when Reese gets the Lepto she gets it with no other vaccinations, b/c they can get sick. But it sounds like your little guy is fine! Thank goodness

| Every time the baby is exposed to the lepto vaccine it increases the possibility of a reaction. That is true with any and all vaccines whether they are human or critter. Same with antibiotics. I will NEVER allow my babies to have lepto-it is not proven to sufficiently raise the antibodies against the disease. I am not convinced the benefit outweighs the chances of problems. As for corona, I feel the same way but the studies are not as definitive. Sometimes we have to just trust that the owners of certain breeds are a bit more educated as to the possibility of problems with their breeds. As with human meds, there is never an always!! As for bordetella, it is similar to the flu vaccine for humans. There are MANY germs that cause kennel cough and the vaccines only protect against a few. I believe(but I am not certain) that there was aforum for vets in ref. vaccines in the past few months. There might be more guidelines but for now, I start my vaccines at 8 weeks, give every 4 weeks for a total of three. After 6 months, I do the rabies vaccine. I do not worm unless I(no, not ME, my baby) has a positive stool. My opinion is that we are doing to ur animals what we have done with humans and antibiotics. We have overused certain meds and now, have created monster germs. These are just my opinions and my vet agrees with them. I would not ever tell someone NOT to have their Yorkie vaccinated against a particular thing. I would never forgive myself(nor would the owner) if the baby were to contract the disease andget very sick or not survive. We, as owners, need to educate ourselves so that we can be a rwal part of the medical team when our babies need care. |

| I was just reading about Lyme disease in dogs on a couple diffrent websites and it said there is a vacine for prevention. I think what my vet said was the "Interceptor" which is heart worm tablet also is used for flea preention. Maybe it is also for tick prevention. I will have to keep reading and let you all know what I find. whispersmom2~ Thanks for your thoughts! The more information about this the better. I am just trying to get all the facts b/c my vet was a bit pushy about vacinations. Whenever I would question her she would always have some story behind needing the vacine.

| Luckily, I am an OLD RN and learned early on that we need to participate actively in our, our family or pets' health care. I mean, we each have a 1 on 1 situation and we can search and research for that one interest. Our vets have many different breeds, animals, species and so on and rarely can they be up to date on ALL issues. That is why we have to educate ourselves. I remember when READERS DIGEST first started printing medical articles. The medical world had fits cause people were mis-diagnosing THEMSELVES. We screeched, begged, pleaded and did everythig we could to tel;l people we, namely medical people, are the ones to rely on. Of course, that was just insecurity on our parts and now we see the need for each person to assume responsibility for part of their OWN health care. It makes me wonder what a vet's problems are with you knowing about the care of your baby.. Guess maybe some of them have assumed the role of "God" that the humans had to give up.. |

| Maybe she thought I was undermining her area of expertise??? I mean she was nice about everything, but always had a rebuttal for any inquiry I made about the vaccines. I only went to her b/c that is where my breeder goes and Reese had already been there. Maybe I should just look for a new vet.

| My vet didn't even tell me about possible reactions to the LEPTO vaccine. I don't understand this, he only told me when I asked him what negative reactions I should look for. He's also pushing for the lyme disease vaccine. I live in Long Island, NY-does anyone have a great vet that is familiar with toy breeds. I love my vet, but I don't think he knows toys...please help. I am very concerned now! Although Louie got the Lepto vaccine today and he has been doing great. I don't think I'll let him do the second round though. I am SO friggin' confused now. I live in an area where there are many racoons with rabies. The town sent out a notice not too long ago that they had caught racoons and they all had rabies.
