Vaccines O.K....just need a quick refresher from all the experienced Yorkie mom and dads. What vaccines should Sophie NOT get?? Thanks, |
Lepto! Also beware of rabies vaccines too early. |
Thank you for asking about this topic again. Reese is getting her second set of shots tomorrow. Is there anything else that I need to know or should ask the vet about her health? This will be the first time that I have brought her. Thanks Chiara |
I'm sorry, could you also tell me why not to get a certain vaccine. I just want to have all the expert opinions I can when I go today to see the vet. Thanks so much, |
I'm certainly no expert, but the Lepto can cause bad reactions in the little guys. Also, I would wait on rabies until at least 6 months old for the same reason. I don't ever intend to let Lexy have a Lepto vaccine. Look up what happened last week to Romeo! The post is titled Really scared...... |
Lepto vaccine is responsible for about 7-% of the bad reactions to vaccinations. AND, is not necessarily efficient. Corona also is one that can cause some problems. My vet book says that these 2 are only needed where those 2 diseases are diagnosed. OR if you are going to an area where either have bee diagnosed...I am concerned that we are vaccining our babies excessively. Our county says RABIES vaccine by 16 weeks. I keep my babies in my home and they are NEVER exposed to strange dogs in my home except when I have puppies to place. I require all dogs and family members in the household to come here for interview but they have to show me a copy of their dog's shot record before they can put him/her down.. For rabies, I can only say that you have to abide by the laws but you can make that decision for yourself. The other two vaccines will not be given my dogs/puppies. My babies from Germany MIGHT have gotten one of them but I cannot remember... |
I don't know what vaccines to avoid, but the ones that seem most important to me are distemper parvo, bordetella, and rabies (at 6 months). Those three are needed for your dog to ever be groomed or kenneled. Hercules also has lyme, but I think that one is more optional. |
Thanks for all the advice. Poor Sophie had her shots today. She is not a happy camper, but is doing well. |
Yes thanks! Reese is going today and I am honestly a bit nervous! |
I guess i am lucky!! Mojo had to take his rabies shot at 3 months of age....thank god the vet the works with my breeder was a very nice and inteligent person and he "adjusted" the vaccine to make sure mojo had no reaction to it...so far so good, my lil guy never had any problems with shots. |
vet time If we can be calm..and I know that is sooo hard with our babies..it helps them remain calm. They take their cues from us. I notice my Yorkies eyes will be glued on me...if I freak out, they pretty much do the same. |

Yeah I will try to stay calm today! I think I am making my mother come with me. How sad huh. Reese is really my first pet and I am little over protective. We had family pets all my life but she is really the first one that is truly mine. She honestly is like having a baby. Since I have not had a child yet she is getting all my motherly nerves. |
I hate bringing this topic up again to everyone, but I went to the vet on Friday and we spoke about the vaccinations. She said that the Lepto was to prevent Lime disease from any tick bites. If people have opted not to give there baby this vaccination, what is there to be sure she does not get lime disease from a tick. We take her to Cape Cod on the weekends which is notorious for having ticks? I am just worried that if she does not get that vaccination then gets bit by a tick with lime disease she will become really sick?? Any other suggestions? Also, she did say that by law in MA all puppies needed to be vaccinated after 12 weeks of age. I am still not doing it until she is at least 6 months though. She is hardly ever outside anyway she is only 12 weeks today. Thanks for all the help everyone so far on this topic! |
Reese's Mommy, he really said the lepto was for the Lyme disease? My vet said the lepto was primarily for pets who may come into contact with water or food contaminated by rodent urine or feces so of course he and I agreed that Tucker didn't need it. However, ticks are another story entirely - even though Tuck is never outside alone and rarely on the ground. What does everybody say out there? |
