Birthing Questions My annabelle is due this Sunday and it is her first litter. The vet said that there are 4 pups for sure and a possible 5th I am a liitle nervous. I have had larger dogs that I have bred but nothing her size. My husband is worried that she wont be able to care for all of them. We both are worried that she might be over zealous when they are born. I pretty much know what to expect, but would love to hear anyones advice.

I am not intending to offend, but it is a bit late to ask these questions. A mentor would have been a huge help to you but there is not enough time for that now. I would suggest you have your vet on stand-by from 58 days from first mating to 63 days from the last. Did your vet do an exam or did he verify his opinion with X-ray or sonogram? First time Yorkie breeders and first time moms can be a hazardous whelping..If there is anyone who you know who has experience in whelping toy breeds, maybe they would help..Your mom could be in real trouble or, hopefully, can push those babies out like she is an old hand at it. Good luck to all who are involved in this whelping. You will be amazed how small these puppies will be..what larger breed did you breed? There will be so much difference between them and the puppies you are expecting now..

There are some really great books out there too. Is your vet planning on being available? Did he give you lots of advice? Five puppies is a lot, and since it's your first time you might call another yorkie breeder in your area and ask if he/she would mind being there. You could pay them. If they are a good breeder they will be happy to assist and will be glad you asked. I am sure in the long run you will be happy you did. I know you want what's best for your mother and her pups. Good luck and congratulations! Last edited by SoCalyorkiLvr; 04-06-2005 at 04:15 PM.

no offense taken, I really do know what to expect. My family has been breeding yorkies for 5 years. It was just that all are different, so I thought some extra advice might be worth while. I already have the vet prepared, and he doesn't see where she will have any problems, they did an x-ray at 53 days. I choose an Xray because her sister had problems with the first litter, she was bred to early and only had one pup that got stuck in the horm=n of the uterus. We didn't want that with her.She is 58 today. I have bred bassets, and have also delivered Labs. Our only concern was that she is pretty zealous. The vet said that she might be a little aggressive at cleaning them off, just to watch her. To be honest I just needed maybe some Mommy to be advice. Or for someone to share deliverary stories. Thanks for your concern and advice

GREAT! You have built-in mentoring in the form of family. I am assuming here so if I am wrong..just ignore the post. They have told you about the whelping box/bed, warmth, suction syringe, warmed wash cloths(to vigorously rub a puppy that might need help) having cord tie (I use dental floss if needed) scissors to help tear the sac or cut the cord, and lots of coffee. Coffee? Yes, coffee!!!!! You surely don't think these Yorkies deliver when it is convenient for us humans. NOOOOOO! They wait til the middle of the night and stay at it til all hope of sleep is gone...LOL Seriously, I am glad you have back-up and help if needed..Let us know when your babies are here and of course, post pics..Congrats!!!!!!! BTW, how large is your dam and sire??

Thanks for the help. I didn't mean to sound as if I was dumb in the first posting, I am not that great with getting out what I always should. I have everything ready, I had just never been to one of the births it seems like I am always to late. Yes family help is great, but it can also be so pressuring to be expected to do it exactly the way they do. Since we have other animals we decded to make her pen her welping box, I got a under the bed rubber maid drawer and placed it in there, I have the heating pad and towels all ready. I did hear form someone that they just clean the pups themselves, then give them to the mommy. I think Annabelle will do great, as long as she is calm. I don't think any breed has their pups at a good time. Our lab had 12 in an hour, we had just ran to the store and it was still 4 days before her due date.

Sorry I didn't post the sizes of the parents. The Dam is 6-7lbs, usually 7. The Sire is 5 lbs. Both are AKC and this is their first litter.

How exciting! I wish I had the guts to breed! Before anyone jumps on me, I'm not going to breed, I just have that fantasy is all! I know a good breeder always studies the breed standards and the heridity of the dam and sire. Just curious though, how does anyone start breeding puppies without all the experience it takes to be a good breeder? Do they buy the very best quality parents and start from there, or do they start with a bitch and use a stud service? Just curious! Good luck with the puppies!

I purchased a female that had reputable lines, I did a stud service checking his lines as well. I didn't breed with out knowing what I was getting into. Of course this is my first yorkie breeding, so anything can happen. I guess anything can happen to anyone regardless of experience. I have always wanted to breed, and I love yorkies. Where I live there doesn't seem to be many reputable breeders. I am not doing it for money, only for the love of having them. I have people that are looking for a good yorkie yet don't want to risk getting involved with a large breeder. I made sure my females lineage was healthy and were DNA registered.. I bred a smaller male to my female, so she would have a safe, well hopefully safe delivery. All breeders start new and I think that if one knows enough, notice I didn't say everything because no one knows that, then breeding your own pups is a great experience.

ttreatsyorkies- You sound like a wonderful breeder and we want to give all the support possible! I especially like your logic about everyone starting new and having a "first time" as well as "knowing enough" as opposed to "knowing everything". You are smart and you sound like you care a great deal!! I am always excited when someone on here has an expectant mommy because we get to experience to. I hope you share with us when it happens! What part of the country are you in?

| I am in North East TN. I think life is such a great thing. I am studying to be a nurse so hopefully I can be around births all day. I would be lying if I wasn't nervous. Every birth is different and should be treated as so. Anything can happen and usually does when you don't think it will. I was hestitant at posting my concerns because I didn't want others to think that I was just another back yard breeder, I have heard that term on this site. I trully love animals and I love having the oppurtunity to provide someone with a puppy that is healthy and as wonderful as mine. Thank you for your kind words. I will definitly post when it all happens.

Does your family live close? Or, just far enough away that you have to call them to come if you need them. I agree that families, or others, can pressure you to do things their way. But, it sounds like you have all bases covered. Bet your family who breed Yorkies will be surprised at how organized you are..Will somebody video the birth for you?? That would be such fun..

You are absolutely right Mojo. I have felt attacked in the past as well, but the admin here is terrific and will keep a handle on things when necessary. We all want a place where we can feel safe. Believe me this forum is much better than some I have been on. Thanks for your post.
