| Hurricane Season - Not Too Early To Plan For It For Your Pets! Start Early~~~ We live in Florida and our hurricane season starts in June and that is not far away. We can start planning early so we will be prepared ahead of time in case of emergency. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hurricane Preparedness for Your Pets Most public shelters do not accept pets. Therefore, it is crucial that you make plans ahead of time. Staying with friends or relatives in a non-evacuation zone is the best option. Another alternative is to stay in hotels in a non-evacuation zone that are pet friendly. Be sure to call ahead for reservations since they fill quickly. And finally, if you cant find arrangements to stay with your pets, call a veterinarian office or boarding kennel to see if space is available. If you leave your pets behind... Be aware that your pets may not survive. When frightened, they can escape through damaged areas or broken windows. They can die from exposure, contaminated food or water, or be run over by a car. If you dont have to evacuate... Pets will be safest in a crate or carrier during the storm. If your house is damaged, they could escape if not in a secure place. Once escaped, there will be no normal landmarks or scents, and they may not find their way home. If you bring plants in your house, keep them away from pets since many plants can be poisonous. After the storm... Walk your pets on a leash until they become familiar with their home again. Check food and water for contamination. Watch for downed power lines and other dangerous debris. If you lose power, dont allow your pet to be around candles or oil lamps. PET EVACUATION KIT Collar, tags and sturdy leash Medications Medical records, current photo, immunization information Food & water (minimum two-week supply) Manual can opener (unless you use dry food) Ziplock bags for treats, toys, etc. First aid kit Pet carrier Crate Cat litter, scoop and pan Plastic bags for waste Paper towels for messes Brush or comb Muzzle, if necessary Mark all belongings with identification ------------------------------------------------------------------

| Thanks for posting this.......my husband and I just moved from Tennessee to....dum-de-dum-dum-DUMMMM.......Charleston, SC on the.......beach! Yes, we want to be ready b/c you never know when you live on the coast (or the gulf). We should start a YT Hurricane Season Preparedness Buddy System......and pair up YT members who live in coastal areas with other members who could help their "buddy" if a situation arises?! Just an idea

| great information muffie's mom. you would not believe the number of lost animals we had over the last two seasons. not to mention zoo animals getting loose and little dogs and cats could turn into (sorry so gross) a little meal. in our area they are doing something about having more shelters that allow pets. hotels that allow pets are few and far between. many people in the area also volunteered to take pets for those who had to stay in shelters and hotels for extended times. Also, those with english bull dogs and any other breed with the thick pallet, remember that they will over heat very easily (when the power is out), they can die from this if not monitored carefully.

Pat, this is a great list but a few more suggestions. 1. Have everything in one place so you can grab it and go (duplicate as much as you can as you might not have enough time to start pulling this all together. 2. Water & Food bowls 3. Tarp to cover pens from heat or rain 4. Flashlight - wind up kind doesn't need batteries 5. Radio 6. Tag with another name on it that doesn't live in the area (put this on during the emgergency) 7. Blankets for you to sit on or cover up with 8. X- Pens so they do not always have to stay leashed to you once you get to a safe area 9. Nutrical 10. Current Vets name 11. Your microchip numbers and the phone number of the company you use

| Great ideas! We have all our important papers in a steel lock box. Most of our stuff is in one corner of a large walk-in closet. We even have sleeping bags and pillows in there in case of fast emergencies that arise out of nowhere. Everyone keep safe and plan early. Get everything ready way ahead of time and BE PREPARED! It's NEVER too early!

| After having to evacuate for Katrina last year with a 3 month old human baby and my yorkie baby I am taking EXTRA precautions this year. Thanks for the info!!! I am already packing and planning for hurricane season, got the pet friendly hotel list and Gracie's suitcase already packed... one thing to add, if your pup has trouble traveling, like Gracie does, check with your vet about the possibility of giving them a mild sedative. I know this helped us big time last year...

| I was trying to be moved before Hurricane season starts, but I don't see that happening... I don't want a repeat of last year or especially of Hurricane Andrew. Can't handle that twice. |

| i think the gulf coast needs a huge break this year, not to wish it on anyone else either, but we have been pounded the last couple of years. most of the predictions for this year are for the east coast. sorry all you east coasters, we had only had one while we lived in NC, in moreheadcity (ooh, try driving out with your two children, a dog, cat, cockatoo, and two day care children, now that was just loads of fun). but after moving to FL we have been on the go steadily. anyway, planning is a good idea, and i keep all of my paper work together but it would be easier to go ahead and place in a grab and go pack.....
