| Popping Pills - How Do You Do It? Luci has to be on medication for the rest of her life. She's only two, so she has a lot of years ahead of her. She has just been diagnosed with Microvascular Dysplasia. The pill has to be swallowed whole...it can't be cut up or chewed. I have had some difficulty getting it down...she's supposed to have it on an empty stomach, but a small piece of food can be given to disguise it if necessary. Day One - Tried to disguise it with peanut butter and cheese...didn't work. Took about 7 tries to get it down. (She loved the pb and cheese though). Day Two - Took 3 tries to get her to swallow it just as the pill. Day Three - Took 4 tries to get her to swallow it. This is going to be a life long event. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this pill into her without having to make multiple attempts every day? I have gotten it down her by opening her mouth, putting it as far back on her tongue as possible, closing her mouth and rubbing her neck till she swallows. Any other suggestions, or know of any small treat that could disguise a pill? Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!!

| My girls gobble them up when I wrap it in deli meat. I get the thin sliced turkey. Tear it in half and wrap up the pill. They get so excited thinking they are getting a special treat! Got to keep an eye on them cuz sometimes they will spit the pill out. Here's a trick for liquid medicine - squirt the medicine into a small piece of bread it soaks up the entire dose and I do the deli meat trick. Good Luck Hope it works!

| what about trying to wrap it in a small piece of hot dog or some sort of meat. Or you could get a soft doggy treat and push it in there. Hope this helps P.S. Do they make it in a liquid?

| I tried wrapping it in cheese...she gobbled the cheese and spit out the pill. The problem is it can't be broken up or chewed, so I will need to disguise it in something small enough for her to swallow...without hopefully eating the disguise and spitting out the pill. I don't know if it comes in liquid. My guess would be no, but I will ask the vet. That would be waaay easier.

| What finally worked for us was when I took a small piece of cheese and put the pill in the center of it then mold it into a ball around the pill. When I first started doing this, I gave Gracie a piece of cheese molded into a ball without the pill, kinda like a treat. Then I would give her another "treat" and this time it had the pill in it. I tried opening her mouth and doing as you described and she would make herself throw the pill back up. She was horrible at taking pills, untill I tried the cheese aproach, it worked perfect for us!! Give it time and try diffrent approaches and sooner or later you will find the one that works for you, just like I did!! They do make a treat that you can disguise a pill in called Pill Pockets. The only place I have seen them is in the Care-a-lot Pet's catalogue. For 35 treats for a small dog it is $5.99. I have never tried them so I can't say if they work or not!!! Good luck to you and I hope that your puppy is doing ok!

| I as well tried the cheese, lunch meat, peanut butter to no avail. The easiest way I have found is to put some Nutrical on your finger without the pill and let them lick it off. Second, put the Nutrical on your finger and hide the pill in it. My dogs love Nutrical so it was very easy. Good luck |

| There are pill guns you can get from the vet. People ususally use this for cats. It shoots the pill into the mouth so far back they have to swallow it.

| Hey Denise We have to give Miko his medications everyday too, and his pill is pretty big. We don't disguise it in a treat or anything like that...We just open his mouth, put the pill in as far back as possible, lift his head, and rub his throat until he swallows. We follow that up with his lactulose that he has to take everyday also. So that ensures that he swallows and that the pill goes down. If your baby is not required to have lactulose, I would maybe follow the pill with some water in a syringe. Miko is soo used to it now, he doesn't fight it at all, and he's gotten really good about taking his medicine...He knows when he's supposed to get it, and he doesn't mind at all. Good luck!!

| Be the Boss, its for her own good We were taught to open their mouth and place the pill down their throat. As far as possible with your two fingers (thumb and index) close their mouth, keep it closed with one hand and rub their throat with the other. Once you feel them swallow its safe to let go. It always worked for me. Except when I had this one dog that kept biting me!!

| Tilly has been on meds for 6 years and she gets her meds in a fingertip of chuncky peanut butter, it's always around like apple pie (maybe) when she sees me reaching for the jar (which she now recognizes ) she looks forward to getting her treat! also the can cheese that comes in the can and you can put it on a cracker, or creame cheese no need to shoot down meds I know they do this! sorry I failed to see that you had already tried peanut butter.. Last edited by jbarile; 02-18-2006 at 09:57 AM. Reason: realized that peanutbutter has been used! |

| I dont use it but the pill gun is very safe. People at my vets were getting it for their cats and i asked them to show me how itt works. They said they would nott get the cat to take the pill without it. I wrap mine in cheese and Chachi takes it.

| It's always fun to watch a vet give a dog a pill - they get it down in a snap second. Then we go home and it's the war of the worlds to get the same pill down our dog. I had to give my dog pills for several years and I ... 1) Rubbed the pill with butter to make it a little slicker.... 2) Held his mouth open with one hand 3) Placed the pill as far back in his throat as possible with the other hand. I even got so I could quickly push it even a little further back with my finger. 1) At this point, his gag reflex took over, and he really had no choice other than to swallow the pill. 2) To further encourage him, one of his favorite treats went into his mouth as soon as possible (a bite of chicken for example) 3) Lots of praise. I think my dog got so used to these pills - that he just gave up. He'd swallow his pill, get his treat, and go on his way. Took only a few seconds. Good luck - BUT - my best advise is "watch the vet do it a couple of times...." They have it down to a science. Carol Jean |

Donating YT 7000 Club Member | The only thing that works for Tucker is a spoon full of cottage cheese. Because of the texture he never knows it is in there. And he practically inhales the cottage cheese so he doesn't chew it.

| When Pippa was on antibiotics i put it in the middle of a bit of cheese spread and then stuck it to roof of her mouth so she had to suck it off. By the time shes sucked it all the tablet has gone.

| I know it's bad but We had a dog that was a nightmare trying to get pills into. So we ended up buying carmels, cut them in half, softening them in our hands then rolling the pill inside. Worked every time he gobbled them up |
