| A New Appreciation for Groomers Yesterday I took Nikko to get his face and nails trimmed. The groomer said I didn't need an appointment since this can be done rather quickly and she actually invited me to stay while she worked on him. I wish you guys could see this lady. She has tattoos up and down her arms and at first glance is rather intimidating but what a nice lady!! She has 3 dogs of her own and one is a yorkie too. We got to talking as she worked on my little one and I was so impressed. She cooed at Nikko and had him pretty calm as she clipped his bangs with a sharp scissor. I was amazed at her skills and how still my chronic squirmer stayed while she did his face. When she started on his nails he became the usual bucking bronco and gave her a gash on her hand that actually bled a bit. She was unfazed and as I apologized to her she reassured me it was an "occupational hazard" and told me not to worry. After watching her, I have a new appreciation for groomers and how hard they work. Dealing with so many dogs and all their different personalities is NOT easy. They get bitten, scratched and barked at (sometimes from the dog owners themselves) on a daily basis. Granted there are a few that need some obedience training themselves (judging by some of the horror stories on here) but for the most part I commend them. They keep our babies neat and pretty and it it wasn't for them, I would never get to see how beautiful my Nikko's eyes really are

| What a great post! I agree, I think groomers sometimes get a bad rap. Sure, there are grooming horror stories, but there are also a lot of really wonderful groomers out there who do a fantastic job. I was really lucky - my groomer does only one dog at a time (no cages) and is absolutely wonderful and sweet with my baby. |

| Great post! I too appreciate Mojo's groomer greatly!!! She is what I call "a little rough around the edges" and by first impressions, one might think she would not be someone they want to trust their pet with....but is one of the groomers/ladies I have ever met. I have tried numerous groomers, some I really have liked, but I want to be there with Mojo. Some people think it is great to drop them off, so they can run errands, but not me...I like to stay there...not to make sure the groomer is doing their job or anything like that, but I just want to be there with him. This groomer recently moved her business to her house (she used to be at a vets office), so she encourages you to stay. I love it since it is close to home too (since I live way out in the woods). She allows you to stay there and talk (she loves to talk!) or you can walk around her place or drive into town for errands. It doesn't take her long at all. And I think Mojo does better because I am there chatting with this lady (that he thinks it treating him so unkindly), so he is a little more comfortable with her now too. She only charges me $20 for everything too (hair, wash, cut, ears, nails, you name it) and I always tip her well too because I know (from watching her) how her job can be. She loves her job and wouldn't trade it for anything. I even asked about her prices and she said, why raise them like everyone else, when I am doing the same thing and it isn't costing me anymore to do it now then it did. I think she likes the company and likes to see the doggies that come in...and she puts up with me....that right there deserves a big tip! HA! She never cares if I ask questions or am not sure what I want done or if I want to try something different......there should be more like her out there! I think finding that one excellent groomer is like finding that one hairstylist that you only want to use or that one friend that you confide to.....finding that one groomer is one of the most important pieces of owning a pet (I think it is up there with finding a good vet).

| I live in the nyc area and was wondering if you could tell me the name of your groomer and what her prices were like. She sounds great! Also, where was she located? I am cutting my girls' hair right now....but at some point that needs to end.

| I so agree, Since I am letting Bailey's hair grow out, I stop in my groomers every now and then to get his nails trimmed, Because I can NOT do it, It amazes me how she gets him to cooperate. She always says N/C but she charges 5.00 for nail trimming, I always give her 10 because of how bad he is. It is worth 3 times that! They work wonders, I know I couldn't do it. Mine does one at a time also, and had no cages, just play areas, and a courtyard for in the summer. She is really good with him, he actually gets excited when we get there, unlike my old groomer , when we would get close to the door, he would put the brakes on.

Ah, that would be a bit far for us. The one groomer in queens I know about has a reputation of being ruff. The hair cutting situation is funny in my house. My husband holds the girls in the air and I start cutting. The problem is knowing when to stop. It is also the time when I clean their ears. Gets everything out of the way in one swoop. I like the short hair puppy look, so I will probably keep doing it myself. Might as well save some money since everything is doubled with two dogs! Thanks for the input!
