| Anal Glands I was talking to my hair dresser today, and she has two male Dashounds (sp?) - Wiener Dogs. She has their anal glands expressed by the groomer every time she has them groomed. She said it is mostly the males that have this problem. Does everyone agree with this, or know anymore about it. Thanks.

| I think this is part of the grooming and it makes them less smelly....

| I think I have also heard that if they have regular hard stools, it is not always necessary

| Unfortunately, I am the expert on anal glands I have expressed a great deal of anal glands with dogs. I dont know statistically, but I didnt notice that male dogs had a bigger issue with this, it seemed equal. My female Yorkie has them done once a month. But I do know that small dogs seem to have more problems then bigger dogs. I would say that for every 10 dogs I have expressed, one has been a big dog. Anal glands are two sacs just inside dogs anus's (at the 3 and 9 oclock position), and fill with the worst nasty smelling liquid I have ever smelled in my life. Most dogs dont have problems and can express this liquid (or sometimes a pastey type consistancy) naturally while defecating. If your dog is smelling foul even after a bath, scooting their rear end on the carpet, or licking their behind, this may be a sign that they may need to be expressed. Atleast where I worked, we didnt express them unless there was a problem, but some groomers might. A Vet or a groomer can easily do this for you. Unless you want me to, I won't go on about how you can express them on your own, unless you ask, because the smell can be so bad that the person will puke. BTW, My dogs stools do not differ depending on how full her anal sacs are, and atleast I have never heard it making any difference about the hardness of their stool.

| The groomer does it on my Westie. You can really tell when he needs it. He has a certain odor and it is not good. It really makes a difference after she does it on him. I don't know about the other two. |

YT Addict | Placing your thumb and forefinger at the 3 amd 9 o'clock position on the sides of the anus and sqeezing gently should work, downside is that your going to catch the nasty stuff in your hand....so either wear latex gloves or you'll need to wash your hands right away . you might wish to watch someone who has done it before first

| glands Anal glands are one of those things that are best left alone UNLESS there is a problem. You know how many years I have had Yorkies..I can count on one hand the dogs who needed regular expressing. BUT a few do from time to time...if it is not broke, don't mess with it. For some reason, the more you express, the more they need it. If your dog has a good diet with fiber, the glands express naturally with a bowel movement..but they can clog and cause an impaction..so just watch them to see. Kate is 8 months now...I have checked her glands a few times, they noraml in size and there is no odor..so no reason to express. It is like pulling hair from the ears..some ears are prone to infection and must have the hair removed, others never have a problem and pulling hair out causes problems... I have seen breeders expressing the glands of 12 week pups..rarely, rarely needed. |

| Scooting is also a sign of anal gland impaction. I am a groomer and we check glands when we groom a dog. Becareful if you apply to much pressure which I've seen inexperienced groomers do, they can rupture. And anal glands that need attention and don't get it, can abcess. But like other YT members have said if your dog has a nice firm stool they should express naturally. But if you don't want to try this lovely thing lol, leave it to the professionals.

| I'm pretty sure the groomer doesn't ever express Murphy and Jasmine as they don't need it. Duffy, however, does. We got him at about 11 weeks old. A couple of months later he started having an odor. Even after I bathed him he had a bad odor. I can't explain it but it was a very bad smell. Sort of like a sewer. That's the only way I can explain it. Someone told me about the anal gland and that some dogs needed it expressed. I took him to the groomer and had him groomed and the anal gland expressed and it made all the difference in him. I don't know why he needs it and the others don't but that is the case. Someone mentioned adding more fiber to his diet. His diet is mostly Biljac frozen dog food. Chicken and rice with a little vegetables (which I cook for them). Eggs a couple of times a week. Cheese as a treat. Sometimes a weiner as a treat. (I know it probably isn't good for him, but he loves it. I also buy treats. Doggie jerky, etc. He eats a little dry dog food. It is out all the time but they don't like it all that well. How can I add more fiber to their diet? |

| Danger.............. I have also heard that you can do some serious damage if you do not know how to express them correctly. SO, please learn how to do it correctly or have your vet do it for you. A lot of groomers have not been properly trained to express anal glands. You could rupture the sacks if it's not done right. The "stuff" really is yukky......... poooo-weeeee

Pat, I really appreciate this info., and this is exactly how I feel about it. My Sadie girl seems to be fine, but about once every two mos. she scoots her little butt on the carpet. My vet said she probably is itching herself, as she has mild allergies. A friend of mine has a Yorkie, and every time she takes it to her vet, he pops the one knee in and out. I told her I did not think that was wise, and it probably makes it worse. Like you said, if it is not broke, don't mess with it. Again, thanks. I always enjoy your informative posts. Kate - Who is honored that your Yorkie is named after me.

Not much to add here, but wanted to let you know that Sadie never liked hard dog food at all. Finally, I just refused to feed her soft canned food, and she started eating it. I had to start out by putting a little water in her dish, and she liked it. Now, it is just hard food, and her teeth are so much better now. Not so much tartar build up.
