I can only imagine how horrible having and unexpected tragedy would be. It is a very difficult thing to have to deal with when you have no warning what you are going to face--not like a dog that was sick or really old where you kind of know ahead of time, which is bad enough itself....but I can only imagine the shock--anyone who would have to go through this at any point in their life has my deepest sympathies. And to have to do it more than once...NO ONE should ever have to. I would probably go crazy.

I'm not getting into who is upset with who on this thread but what ever happened to
training your dog???? If you don't then I guess it is better than letting your dog get
killed by a car.

Even a trained dog can take off. You can't reason with a dog and tell that it can't go off into the street because it's dangerous. Dogs are still after all animals, and alot of dogs if given the choice between listening to their owners or chaising something, will take off. Brandy come to me about 80% of the time, but there is a gap in the fence in the front yard that she and squeeze through. The landlord won't fix it and I have tried to block it off but nothing works. If I get an invisible fence it would be for the extra protection incase she bolts out the front door or gets out of the backyard.

I have a question, now that this is already way off subject.

SoCal~Since you trained your dogs as service dogs, I assume they follow commands pretty well, right? How did you train them differently as far as basic commands? What I mean is, from what I know, service dogs are pretty consistant w/ their behavior as far as follwing what the owner says...what training to they have to have-how is it different from the way the "Average Joe" would train their dog?

the street, they don't. By the way my dog is 11 1/2 yrs old

Exactly! Both of my dogs have been to training classes and will still try to bolt out the door. I am lucky that where I am right now has a front and a back fense. Where I will be moving to you cant put fences up. I will be using the electric fence to keep them contained to an area.

I didn't mean my question towards anyone in particular, I just know that some dogs seem to refuse to be 'broken,' no matter what the owner tries. I was just wondering, since Kim has trained her dogs as service dogs, if there is something she does differently?

I know what the big problems are. The post woman gives the dogs treats everytime she delivers the mail, so in a sense my dog is rewarded everytime that she runs up to the gate from her. I told her not to, but the damage might have already been done because she still treats the neighbor's dog who we share the yard with. So when she sees the neighbor's dog run up to the gate and get the treats she will want to do even though she's not allowed in that area so she will do anything to get it. There are also kids on the other side. So when they pet her or if she is given a treat then that's training her in the other direction. My dog is 6 months old so I think age has alot to do with it to. I do work with her and she does know the come command, sometimes she just doesn't listen to me though.
oh yeah, and NOT all dogs are exactly the same in their behaviors.

come is the most important command but STAY really is. If you see her across the street or somewhere she should not be STAY is going to save her

yes, she is very young. She does stay very well. That is a good point to tell her stay instead of come if she is ABOUT to step into the street. I am saying that since she is not 100% trained yet I am not going to risk an accident happening. I think that putting up a fence until she is trained or to help her be trained is a better option. I thought that I could trust her once, I even had 2 other adults with me in the front yard with some children in the back. Usually she won't take off if people are in the yard with us. But to my surprise she did try to run towards the gate. I don't want to risk that happening again, the invisible fence will kind of be like "insurance" to make sure she doesn't try it again.

Joan, I think Crystal is one of the exceptions to the rule, just as is my Sultan. He will not leave my side no matter what. As for my other heathens..lolol.

One of mine Jewels doesnt go anywhere either. Chachi on the other hand is hyper and strong willed and he would be gone without some type of fencing.

My pug Bailey is the SAME way. He has no desire to run away. I can even trust him to walk beside me if I'm going down the driveway. I am not sure what he would do if another dog approached him though because when he's leashed or in the yard he always barks. Brandy on the other hand is a little firecraker.

You could be right Irene, but when I got Crystal at 3 yrs old, believe me she
did not stay by my side. I think you have to get them to the point that you
know that when you are not there they will behave as if you were. Kinda
what we do with children She wasn't real quick to catch on but i went
around the entire area of our yard for weeks at a time showing her just
how far she was allowed to go and then again and again with a light jerking movement if she went any further. In those days I did not know about clicker
training and that might work but in this case a voice command from it's
master would be a great advantage. Once I moved to my condo
I did not need to retrain her because she knew she was to stay in front. I do
put a lead on her if we go somewhere where she has not been before or might
be dangerous since I trained her for the yard does not mean that she could
handle everything. Now that I am in an apt. and retired we do our walks and
she is fine. Oh dear, I am going to spell this wrong is it Chachi, do you think
since you had the fence in your yard you might have felt let it go at that.
Only you guys know your own dog and how much time you have to work with
them but it's fun and look how Mike's Eddie has come along in such a short
time.

My Codie runs and runs until I catch him. I wish I could trust him off a like but I can't -- he doesn't stay by my side like your Sultan does -- I wish he did though.
