How cold is too cold Hi everyone This is homers grandma. Homer is doing great these days . He will be 10 weeks old on Sunday and will be going to the vet for his next needle on Saturday . We will know then how heavy he is. I am just curious as to when we can start taking him outside to Potty or for a short walk and to let him burn off some energy. We are from easten Canada Nova Scotia and the weather is still cold .The snow is starting to melt so we have bare pavement and sidewalks. but the temperature is about +6 celcius or 39 degrees F. I can't wait to start taking him out so I thought I would ask the experts. Fran

I was just up in Idaho last week visiting some family & it was roughly 30 degrees outside the whole time I was there. I didn't want Bailey's potty training to degress so we took him outside to go potty like normal. I put his sweater on him when I took him out, but he seemed fine. He was only outside though, for a few min's at a time....

| My philosophy is: If they are willing to go outside, let them... for short periods of time when it's freezing. I've mentioned in other posts that my dog will NOT go outside, even for a minute. I cannot wait for it to warm up here so we can go for short walks or sit outside. Its 36 F here today.

Fran, if Homer is not done with his series of shots, I would be careful taking him outside. I remember when Mason was 10 weeks and only had 2 sets of shots my vet telling me that he shouldn't be out where he can sniff other dog's pee/poop because he can catch diseases. So I would suggest that you either wait until Homer gets all his shots, or take him out for very short walks and keep him on a sidewalk. In terms of weather, I don't let Mason out when there is snow outside. In the past I have let him walk in the snow and his bottom paw turned so red I felt aweful. ALso he has gotten sick this past winter so I am very cautious of letting him out in the cold. But 39degrees F seems fine. I would put a sweater on him though. Oh, and StewiesMom, I am a WOLVERINE, you better watch out

Sweetie absolutely loves snow - she will run (with me close behind at the end of her leash) and as the snow makes little balls and roll out in front of her she chases them!! But getting snow out of a yorkie's fur is horrible!! I have to get the hair dryer out and literally melt it out of her fur. I bundle her up in her PJ's and a coat - I live in the mountains of western NC & we get some below 0 degree weather - not often - but Sweetie is trained to go outside... no matter the weather..... I really love it, too, when she just has to go out in the middle of a thunderstorm!!! But she hasn't had an accident in the house in years... Cyndi (The other "Sweetie's Mom")
