| Neutered males Hi folks.....I had a female Yorkie for 14 years and she was wonderful. When I contacted a breeder I asked her if she noticed any difference with males. She said they are much easier going, cuddlier etc. I decided to try a male. Thor is now 6 months old and we love him dearly. He’s far too busy to cuddle! He’s about ten pounds and full of energy. We are planning on having him neutered after Christmas. Have any of you noticed any significant changes afterwards re cuddles, behavior etc? |

| I don’t think anyone can accurately generalize the personality traits of an entire breed or gender; there are always going to be exceptions to generalizations. However, I also think it’s likely that your pup’s behavior will change in both subtle and less subtle ways as matures, so he could very well become cuddlier as he grows older. Neutering won’t necessarily make him cuddlier, but it’s clearly the best thing for his long range health, and it will also prevent many kinds of undesirable behaviors that non-neutered dogs exhibit when they feel the urge to breed. My Jax was far too energetic to cuddle at six months, and he was neutered at eight months.(It was delayed several months by pandemic closures.) He does like to cuddle a bit now (at about 15 months) but think that’s more the result of maturity than the neuter surgery. It’s been a gradual change, not an immediate post surgical change. |

| Neutering your pup is a must, period. Neutered/spayed dogs are healthier and generally calmer overall...But, again, it is your responsibility to neuter your puppy for his well-being (mental and physical). Enjoy your little boy!! |

| Thank you for your responses! I most certainly will have Thor neutered. I was just wondering if you noticed any changes in behavior or attitude. |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Owning an intact dog takes e extra care by said owner. My dogs are intact and I'm happy and so are they. We go lots of places and do fun stuff. I ! Believe in plan breeding. Most folks don't or want take that kind of care. To. Whit I say neuter is probably your best option.

| Most people get their yorkies neutered as puppies so its very hard to tell if their personalities change because as puppies they are still developing their personalities. It is definitely much better for their health to be neutered and they also wont have to suffer when they smell a female in heat which can be done from a pretty long distance. With yorkies/small breeds research is showing that neutering as puppies has no change in their bone growth. I had my first male neutered at 6 months and everything was great but with my other male I waited closer to 8/9 months and it was the worst mistake ever because he started marking before he was neutered and still occasionally has issues with that. Also yorkies do not always lose all of their baby teeth so you will want the vet to check for any that haven't fallen out when he get neutered so they can go ahead and pull them.
