My biggest problem, as the temperature has dropped, is that Jax still hasn’t given up his fascination with playing in his water dish. It was bad enough in warm weather, when I just had to worry about slippery water puddles on the floor if I left his water dish unsupervised. Now, I have to worry about either (1) Jax playing in the water and getting wet and chilled, or (2) Jax not drinking enough water because I have to keep the bowl on the counter and offer him drinks regularly all day. Neither is good, but he absolutely can’t resist playing in the water when it’s in front of him.

Yep, still doing it. I’ve tried at least a dozen different dishes. I’ve tried smaller dishes inside larger dishes. I’ve tried elevating the dishes (but only slightly, as Jax has short legs). He still plays in his water as soon as I turn my back on him. So, as I said, I have to keep the water dish on the counter and offer it to him multiple times a day, which I hate doing because I’m afraid he’s going to be thirsty and/or not drink enough water.

Thanks for the kind words. In a way, I’m afraid I’m being too tuned-in and it might lead to more problems down the road. Right now, with the pandemic raging on, I’m home most of the time so I can offer him water every hour but prevent him from playing in it. Someday, though, I might (gasp!) have the opportunity to be away from home for half a day ... and then what will he do, if he hasn’t stopped this behavior and he can’t have a bowl of water left on the floor?

What about something like this? Pet water bottle. You can get stands for them, so you don't have to put them into a crate.

One of mine used to do this, not my Yorkies but one of my Skye Terriers. She was dreadful, both front feet in,like she was trying to dig through the bottom of the bowl, water flying everywhere till she was soaked & the dish was empty. Then she’d flip the dish upside down & chase it all round the place pushing it with her nose. I tried everything, every type of dish, really heavy pottery ones, ones with rubber suction on the bottom but she defied them all. Never did solve it. Sorry.

That’s one thing I haven’t tried. How do you teach a dog to use one? Jax is vision impaired, which might (or might not) make it difficult. | |
