| Please Help!! We recently installed a subfloor to prepare for hardwood floors that will be installed in the coming weeks. The problem is my 2 yr old Yorkie Chase started pooping on it a couple days ago. He’s been potty trained for awhile now and has not been in a x pen in over a year. Where is this coming from and how might I stop it? I figured he’s doing it because it’s something new but I hope he won’t continue this behavior when my new floors are put down. I thought my only worry with him would be keeping his nails cut so he don’t scratch it. Also whenever we go anywhere like Home Depot or the groomer (when he went) he automatically has to poop. I figured that’s his way of marking but as I said he haven’t had an accident in our house in a very long time. Well over a year. He’s very good at waiting until we take him outside. I need this behavior to stop like yesterday!!! |

| It you’re reasonably sure there is no new medical issue, I would equate this to a human with stress induced irritable bowel syndrome. In other words, a stressful situation (a loud store, the groomer, a new floor — which probably didn’t appear silently during the night but involved several days of strangers and noise) causes the need to have a bowel movement. Even though your pup has been potty trained for a while, I would guess the best solution would be to return temporarily to potty training habits: confining him to a pen or crate, frequent trips outside, rewards for pottying in the right place. And you will probably need to keep that up through the time the new floor is installed and for a while afterwards. I wouldn’t think it would take too long after the new floor is in, just long enough for the stress to dissipate and for him to adjust to the new normal. One other thing you should consider: some new floor coverings come with strong chemical odors that can be annoying or nauseating to animals. Those generally dissipate over time, too, but they can cause problems for sensitive systems until they do. If that’s the issue, you’ll want to keep him away from the new floor until it’s safe for him. |

| Thank you so much. That makes a lot of sense. Maybe it is stress. With people in/out working, beating/banging and then the fireworks that haven’t stopped it’s probably a lot for him. We’ll start some of our potty training habits again and pray for the best. Thanks again!!! |

| Had a brief problem when I put down a new floor. I got a couple small scat mats and it sent the message to discourage the behaviors while I worked on her training habits again.

| My dogs did the same thing. They thought the subfloor was one giant place to potty. I did the same as yorkiemini and put down potty pads for them to use instead, until the floor was installed.
