| Artie still asks about Taco every day. He’s a little sad but I told him Taco went to live with his family and we were just watching him for a bit. The hardest part is Molli (our 9yr old yorkie) even though she hated Taco and they only played a couple of times now she’s alone again I can tell she’s depressed. Her life is just waiting to be fed. She doesn’t want to go outside or run or play, she’s sleeps under the couch most the day and sometimes it’s so quiet I feel like we have zero dogs. I’m thinking we need to go baby puppy so we can be the ones raising it but I dunno, finding a puppy is hard. So at the moment we are just trying to spoil Molli and teach Artie how to be a good dog owner.

When faced with a depressed, withdrawn dog, here's what worked for me: Happily engage her into some fun obedience training to get her involved in learning new skills for the pride and glow of the praise, immediate rewards, feelings of confidence from working she'll get. An enthusiastic dog handler/custodian involved with their dog can get them going again as long as they are well, uninjured and older dogs can use the gentle movements, the renewed activity, teamwork w/mom. Training helps even introverted dogs learn to feel good again, accomplished, proud they please you and you enjoy working with them for your goals. Dogs love to work.

On Molli, since you say she hated Taco and rarely played with him, it’s more likely that she’s reflecting your unhappiness over Taco’s departure than that she’s depressed Taco is gone. Give her plenty of love and attention, and she will be fine. And she’s a much better dog to teach Artie to be a good dog owner than a puppy would be. | |

| Well we tried adopting a slightly young pup that was past the teething stage and that’s how we ended up in this mess. I just can’t trust a dog I didn’t train from the beginning. Artie has been around dogs since he was born. I never let him try to pick them up or be too rough with them. I think we might go a bit bigger than a yorkie though, maybe mini schnauzer or some sort of mini doodle. I’m a stay at home Mom until he goes to school so I have the time for a puppy, I wish there were options but after what we went through I just can’t do a dog with an unknown history

| We had a wonderful, loving mini schnauzer when we had kids in the family. He was sturdy enough to not be too fragile with the children, but was a great playmate who was gentle and loving. When we had our first grandson, he slept under his crib "guarding" him at night!
