| Outside nails on back paws Gidget's outside nails on her back paws don't grow straight out, they curl toward the foot pad. The cuticle is very close to the end of the nail which is almost into the foot pad. When I clip the nail enough to keep it out of the foot pad, it bleeds slightly. Anyone else have this problem and what's the solution? I take her to the Vet Tuesday for a regular check up so will mention this to him at that time. |

| Is it the dew claw? That seems to happen a lot with dew claws.

| Yes, dew claws are on all 4 legs, some of my pups one in the back was not removed as a baby. If it is the dew claw it can curl like a Rams horn. I had that issue with one of my girls, every 2 weeks I had to take her to the groomer to have it snipped the wee lil bit that it grew, it took many, many months to get it to a normal size. Cody has one dew claw on his hind leg, I always remind the groomer to snip it, I don't want another Ram horn nail. Another of my now passed girls had one that if not clipped monthly it would cut into her hind leg.

| Nothing is ever to late to do but, it will be a surgery. Your best bet is to speak with your vet if there is a possibility that nail is so close to her skin that it can cut into her. My girl that had the curled dew claw that looked like a Rams horn was years back, vet technology was not as advanced as it is today if it was I would have had it removed. Dew claws on puppies I believe are removed when their tails are docked, this is done when they are wee lil babies.

| She has an appt with Vet in the morning. Am going to ask him about having them removed. I trust him so will do whatever he thinks is best for her. |

| After a few days old it’s considered an amputation. If they are loose and not connected to anything it’s easier then when they are connected to bone. Unless it was a really huge deal I would just try to live with them as best as possible.

| Thanks, Matese. Think your advice is very good. Have them cut down to a good size. Bough an Oster Nail Grinder. It has a guard so I can't trim the nails too short. Think this will work well on the dew claws if I just keep a really close check on them. If necessary I can do a little trimming as needed. |
