| Pet Sitting Question I am traveling the week of July 4th and in the process of hiring a pet sitter off of Rover.com. Would you prefer to have the sitter come to your place and stay or bring your babies to the sitter's home? I am leaning more towards the sitters home option. Mostly it has to do with me not being comfortable having a stranger in my home and sleeping in my bed. I live in a studio apartment and do not have a guest room. I am finding it is more expensive to have my babies go to the sitters as they charge per dog; wherein if the sitter stayed at my place they do not charge per dog. My concern is Bella and Thumper. I think they will be fine if they are together but I always worry about them being in new spaces. Additionally, at home I have a camera I can watch them from when I am away. I am meeting with two potential sitters this weekend. Both seemed nice over text messaging. One is my preferred and the other one I am only meeting because I already agreed to the appointment without realizing she will not allow me to view her home (apparently it is a security risk for her) I am not comfortable leaving my dogs with someone where I have not inspected the home; no matter how many 5 star reviews she receives on Rover. We are meeting at a nearby dog park I was already planning to take the dogs to after their grooming appt. so I am not going out of my way. The other potential sitter has a mixed yorkie and I will be meeting her at her home to see if the dogs are a good match and I can view her home. If all goes well I will choose her. On a side note in my next life I want to be a pet sitter. In NYC they make a ton of money. I am paying triple the money for pet sitting than I spent on my airline ticket.

| A security risk ??? Hmmm, sounds fishy to me & there is no way I would leave my babies with anyone that doesn't allow me to see where my babies are staying. That would be like myself with my home daycare telling parents well you can meet me BUT you can't see my home, the place where your child will be for more hrs of the wk then they are in their own home AND if I were you I would tell her just that. I have known a few people that use doggy daycare & what this person is saying is not gonna fly. That said, I would be ok with my pet staying away from home BUT like with your own home lots of doggy daycares offer video of your babies in their home for you to see all day. I would want to see where they will have outside time, where they will eat & sleep as well and that the sitter is home most of the day aside for maybe going out for an errand or 2 but being away no more then about an hr at a time as they are getting paid to sit with your pet just like child care. With child care we do not have the privilege to go out & about whenever we choose, it is our job, just like with any other job a person may have & you don't get to run your errands till after work. I get that with doggy daycare your pups are there day & night so I would want to know also where my babies will stay if the sitter must step out for a bit & if there are other pets in the house your babies don't normally live with are they kept separated from pets (ie) kept in separate rooms, crates or kennel/runs for their safety as this could be a problem while the sitter is out. I would check out a pet sitters home for safety issues same as for children, are there toxic plants in the yard or home, are electrical cords placed in such a way that my pet can not get tangled in while the sitter is away, same with blind chords & blinds in general should be stored in the up & open position with the string/cords up & over the top of the blind when no one is home. If baby/doggy gates are used are they the rite kind, safe from my pet getting stuck or strangled in ? Garbage cans not assessable to the pets in the event there is anything toxic in them, that toilet lids are kept in the down/closed position. These are things I do in my own home & would expect no less from my dog sitters home. |

| We tried a Rover.com in Cape Cod Massachusetts......never again. The sitter had her two Yorkies and two other guests, one a big dog that would harass my Toby....and the place reeked of urine. If I were to consider anything, it would be at my house, and alert the neighbors to keep an eye out. |

| I think it greatly depends on the dog. I am lucky I have my dad who watches Jackson for me. He doesn't do well with strangers without me around and I know for him if I had to choose an option - I'd prefer him to at least be comfortable in his own home. He'd be more freaked out in a new place. I dogsit for a little 15 year old Pomeranian mix who is so go with the flow and happy go lucky - he does not care where he is. So the owner prefers him to be in my home. I was a pet sitter for years and did well. It can definitely be a lucrative business. I never thought it was weird to sleep in another persons bed or anything - we would alway strip all the sheets and put them in the washer/dryer before we left after our stay or the owner would leave some etc. But everyone is different with that.

| update So I met with both potential sitters this past weekend. I decided to make a pro and con list to help make my decision. I know most won't agree with me but I decided to go with the sitter that I met at the dog park. She and I clicked a lot better and our dogs got along wonderfully. I asked why she doesn't allow people in her apartment and it is because a few years ago she did a potential meet and greet with a new client and the next day ended up being robbed. I understand her concern. To alleviate my own concerns she gave me a list of references to call and showed me pictures of the set up. I called all the references and they had nothing but glowing reviews of her and her husband. She even called me the next day to see how Thumper was as I mention him going to the Vet for a check up. The other sitter would have been fine but the place was much smaller and cluttered. Additionally, her dog she had was territorial and constantly barking at Bella and Thumper. I felt she was not going to be as attentive as I would have liked her to be. I am happy with my decision and feel it is the right one for me.
