I think it greatly depends on the dog.

I am lucky I have my dad who watches Jackson for me. He doesn't do well with strangers without me around and I know for him if I had to choose an option - I'd prefer him to at least be comfortable in his own home. He'd be more freaked out in a new place.

I dogsit for a little 15 year old Pomeranian mix who is so go with the flow and happy go lucky - he does not care where he is. So the owner prefers him to be in my home.

I was a pet sitter for years and did well. It can definitely be a lucrative business. I never thought it was weird to sleep in another persons bed or anything - we would alway strip all the sheets and put them in the washer/dryer before we left after our stay or the owner would leave some etc. But everyone is different with that.
