Hawks constantly overhead this year

It has been a long time since I’ve been on YT, but I have such a soft spot for the people and pups here.

My dear friend sent me an AKC article about protecting our babies from coyotes and birds of prey. The article mentioned a vest designed to protect dogs from coyotes and hawks. If I needed to protect Katie from predators, I surely would purchase one of these. I am linking the XS and mini sizes, but they come larger. This is just the vest, but you need to add things to and spikes for coyotes. Look at the accessories.

WOW! Now I'm scared for my puppy! We have nesting bald eagles about a mile away, so our neighborhood is in their hunting area. We also have hawks. I keep him on a leash outside and never leave him alone, but it sounds like that isn't always successful! Poor puppy...he so loves running around in the back yard! My daughter has a high fence around her chicken run with a chicken wire "ceiling" to protect her chickens from predators. I think I'm going to try and figure out how to do that over the part of my yard where puppy likes to play.

They say metallic things scare birds off. Does it scare off big ones? I thought maybe I could put a few posts around the yard and attach metallic streamers, used cd's and that sort of thing. Would probably be really ugly, think it would keep puppy safe?

Some success.
Yesterday I put six foot stakes, driveway lining poles, tall plant stakes and added Mylar strips to the tops. I then placed them about twelve feet apart in vertices rows in the yard. The wind carries the strips across the rows. For the first time in a month there are no visible hawks circling. Of course, I still have my two on short leads. Now this is not really tested and I carry the 64 inch umbrella too, but I am very hopeful.

I was telling the manager about how I keep Zeke close due to the hawks and she said most of them are vultures and they won't bother anything alive.
Then just 5 minutes ago I walked out front and there was the partial remains of some larger bird. Perhaps a vulture itself because there was a mouse from the bird's? insides.
The point of this is the body was just outside the covering of a very large shade tree. So I am going to be extra vigilant. The neighbors here all say a vulture couldn't pick up an 8 lb dog nor would they want it if it was alive but I don't know what else could have killed the bird. Very disconcerting.

Follow your instincts, don't take chances, stay vigilant. I wouldn't put much credence in what neighbors' say--they may be right, but...??? Again, follow your instincts and do what feels right.

The manager says it looks like an Eagle youngster and perhaps one of the vultures got it. So much for vultures only eating dead animals. Well I suppose it was killed before it was eaten. Very sad about it having been an Eagle.
