Default Do older Yorkies get more demanding?

Eddie turns 14 next month. Hes always been a pretty mellow, non-needy dog. He slept until I got up at 10 am. He wasnt very barky. Suddenly, hes barking more to alert me he wants something. At first, it was more bathroom breaks at night. No problem. I figured maybe a diet change or change in physical needs of an older Yorkie explained that.

But today, at 8 am, hes throwing a hissy fit, barking in bed because he thinks its time for breakfast two hours early. I let him out once because I figured he needed a potty break, but no. He walked straight to his food bowl. Now I will pretty much do anything for my dogs, but I dont want to train them that theyre in charge!

He also barks more when outside in the backyard. He barks to let the neighbor dog know hes outside. He barks routinely as he looks down the street. He barks to go outside more often.

Its not really an annoyance. Im just interested in the change of habits. Is this a senior Yorkie thing?

Callie can be more demanding lol shes about to be 11. She gets grumpy if you try to get her up and out of bed early and when she wants her food she will do this growling like thing we call talking. If she wants to be rubbed on she will do it to lol.

Alfie will be 14 next week and he now is also more demanding lol. He is totally deaf now and he barks to get out. Sometimes he goes to the door about 6 times in a hour just to get the door open so he can go out to the deck and have a little bark. He also thinks he should get a treat for going out , for coming in for just looking up at the the treat box , He is just a little character, but I think he is retraining us

Exactly! Eddie does that at the back door too. In the house, he's never satisfied. He can have 5 toys, but he wants the ONE Jillie has or he barks, barks, barks.

So funny to me.

When my now passed girl was 14 she was starting to loose her hearing and sight, she was going through some major life changes, aging. Yeah she got a bit more demanding just like older humans do. She was relentless so what ever she wanted she got, one never knows how long they will be with us, why deny them. My girl left me at 17 yo, I miss her so much.

Agreed. I remember my last old man, Jack, who had an especially annoying bark in his later years. Now, I miss that the most. I even have it as a ringtone.

Awwwww, Mike !

This kind of stuff just reminds me of my "Floop", my "Bear", my Wylie man ... we miss him every single day and reminisce about him all the time. He required more in his later years for sure - especially bc he was blind, but I almost miss that the most somehow -- bc when I'd carry him (up/down the stairs, for example) I'd sing him my goofy "Bear Song" right into his little ear...just for him, a nonsense little song about him/for him. Omg I miss that SO much now ........

Ya know, we have them from wee lil babies, see them grow and enjoying life and we love them so much, then we see them slowing down a bit by age 9 or 10, for us the lucky ones that that have them at age 14 that loves gets deeper as they age, I know for me it did, my pup at 17 was 100% blind and deaf, dementia had set in, she had loss of bladder control, I too would pick her up and sing her, her goofy song right into her ear hoping she could hear my voice.
That barking as a ring tone is awesome, but I personally don't know if I could handle that. She is gone 4 years and I still cry over her, I loved her too much I guess. We all spoil our babies throughout their years, but when they become seniors we spoil them more, give in to their wants. When my girl demanded to eat 3 hours before her time I gave her 1/2 her portion and the other 1/2 at her regular time. They are just to sweet as they age.

I have a little wannabe dictator at 10 1/2!!! Sweet, compliant little Tibbe now feels he has extra rights and demands I should meet and meet NOW, no dawdling. He's a piece of work!

Yes, their habits and demands change as they get older but what would we do without them. They love us unconditionally. We can do the same for them as they get older.

Our vet says if he was a dog he would like to be our dog as they are so pampered, Alfie has had epilepsy for years now and we are so happy to still, have him with us .

I have had several other breeds before I got hooked on yorkies, I loved those other babies much, and mourned when they had to leave. But these yorkies are so child like, so entertaining, so hard to get mad at them when they are naughty, such a different breed, they just worm their way deep into our hearts and it's soooo hard to be firm with them when they give that lil look that just melts our hearts.

So funny Lottie gets embarrassed over Alfie's accidents, these babies are so funny lol.

I don't sing in the shower or the car lol, but I sing to my furbabies, they are such wonderful critics lol.

My Brandi also got a little demanding as she got older and honestly I gave into her demands. When they reach a certain age and their health starts failing, I spoil them rotten even more.

I gave into all of her demands and whims as she got older and sicker. The old rules just no longer apply. I tend to let my guard down a little.

My little Pixie definitely got more vocal and more needy during the last years of her life. Her eye sight was gradually diminishing and she had lost some of her hearing and I think she felt a bit more vulnerable and was just asking for extra emotional support. Actually some of the memories I cherish most are from those final more demanding years. Pixie had always been a my little girl and deeply bonded but towards the end of her life she became totally inseparable from me. If I had to go out somewhere where I couldn't take her my husband said she would just wait by the door the entire time I was gone...wouldn't eat or go outside to do her business until I got home and she wouldn't let him pick her up to comfort her. I have loved, and love, all our doggies, but my precious little Pixie was extra special and I will always deeply miss her.
