George First, thank you for adopting and loving a senior dog. I agree with what others have said and he may just be settling in. I adopted a boy at one year old and he has never been one for playing and toys. He has just one toy that he will pick up now and again and want me to play with him and it. But only if he initiated the play. My dog is nine also now. As he ages he has become more quiet and usually only gets from his sleep to follow me around, eat, or go for walks or in the car....he loves the car! He is in great health as a recent vet exam and comprehensive tests show. He loves to walk and smell etc! He seems to come more alive if others enter the house, so perhaps he is bored with my quiet senior existence? He still can jump on the sofa, and seems to have no issues with his joints. But I do try to stop jumping when I can. He loves tricks but only for tiny low fat treats! He never was trained with p pads here, but after he went to a trainer friend for a week he came back p pad trained. Now, if I do not see him ask to go out, he will use the pad, but he prefers walks, smells etc! So good luck with your new boy. I am sure he will soon be quite comfortable in his new home and you will see what his true personality is. Some dogs do not play much.

Dottie, you have just described George perfectly. I also try and help him up and down before he jumps. Worried about bone stress. Well, I guess I won't invest in anymore toys. His teeth are really healthy but I need to fine a good chewy treat so he can keep them clean. I'm going into a local pet store Monday and believe they're know what's good. I have a big bag of Blue Buffalo that should provide much of his nutrition.

George. My dog had a slight bout of pancreatitis when he was younger. Prior to this I was feeding Blue Buffalo at the time and found the quality control was not very good as the bag quality seemed to change from bag to bag, and after the P attack I was advised by the vet to feed the Hills Prescription ID Low Fat kibble. Although the ingredients did not seem the best to me I have fed that ever since and he has kept very well. I also do not feed people food or high fat treats. I have found that the molars tend to get tartar and the best way to reduce it is by daily brushing, which I cannot do as it is so hard to get to the back of his mouth. I just keep an eye on his teeth and get a full dental as needed. I think one has to be careful with Chewy things to clean teeth as they can cause tummy obstruction if not used with great care, and also illness. They also tend to be high fat. So in short, I feel that the low fat food is good as my dog ages and that vet dentals are the only real way to control tartar. But I am sure others have other ideas and experiences. Each dog is different and we have to just do what is best for our particular dog. Look forward to hearing how your dog progresses with time. One thing is sure, he will take your heart!!!

| Just want to say, my Cali is 9 years old now, and does agility at least once a week and I have noticed that she seems to sleep more than she used to. But....some of that could be this reallyncold winter we have had this year so,she is not spending as much time running around outside!

Winter really is best served by sleeping through it. "A dog's life."

My yorkie has a high prey drive and will take off as soon as she see's any furry creatures like squirrels or birds. As a precaution, don't let them off leash unless in a fenced in area. The other to consider are birds of prey, depending on the size of your yorkie, they can swoop in and snatch your yorkie right up. There are quite few stories on the Internet of this happening.' Of course I don't want you to live in fear of all the dangers but you just need to be aware that yorkies can be both predators and prey at the same time not to mention the risk of getting hit by cars. You just have to be a little diligent when they are outside. Last edited by yavenay; 02-12-2018 at 07:04 AM.

Glad you mentioned birds of prey. I live on a river and we have lots of hawks that circle in the summer evenings looking for prey. Or perhaps simply enjoying the joy of flying in circles. We also have a few Eagles. So, I appreciate you mentioning them. Since George got away from me a couple of days back, he does not move out the door without a leash. But I will be extra mindful when the hawks are circling and perhaps not even go out with him at that time of day. We also have lots of rattlers and I avoid the rocks thinking they may already be beginning to come out with the warm days we've been having here in the NW. Thanks again!

Dottie, I totally agree with you on low fat diets and am also mindful of no sugar. I think sugar and corn are both very bad for dogs and humans. I like meat and some rice and some veggies for George. He doesn't really like the Blue Buffalo plain so I add a tiny bit of chicken broth and he seems to enjoy it. I may buy something different next time. 'm afraid I am a habitual label reader so am very careful about what he eats. As far as teeth, I bought a toothbrush but it hasn't arrived yet. Thank you for sharing about your Yorkie. Rubye
