Or you can do positive training, go to a park or neighborhood where it is safe to walk with out those things and so on. They can be cruel if the dog can not pant (deadly id the dog can't pant) and are not fitted right. It in my opinion would be a last thing to try. Dogs are going to eat bugs and you can stop that its the mushrooms that would be the issue.

As I said , some caterpillars are deadly if eaten. Also I suggested a (Cage Muzzle) The dog can pant, breath and even drink water. With the season change suddenly it would be safest to use the muzzle & she can also do training at the same time & when the dangers are gone the muzzle can be removed & the training continued. I'm thinking maybe you are not familiar with a cage muzzle as they are often used for just this problem & as I said, not cruel or uncomfortable. They don't hold the dogs mouth closed at all & the dog can even bark freely. I am not saying the dog should not be properly trained just a suggestion for the urgent & potentialy deadly situation at hand.

and when i tell her to leave it the little jerk just tries to est it faster while looking at me....

Not with bugs, but in other situations Piper does that, too! It's like she's "I don't care, you can't make me, and nanananaa, I win!" I've never chased after her or been harsh with her, but I think pulling-a-fast one, on occasion, is simply in their nature! Have you tried using a squirt gun? When outside, barking at the neighbor and totally ignoring me, I'll squirt Piper--if only to get her attention.

I always walk mine on cement. One time our past yorkie ate a caterpillar and it just about killed her. Susan

Their mouths are all they have for protection and feeling things. What happen if a dog comes and attacks (which is not so rare anymore) they have no self defense at all they are just a sitting duck persay. There are safe places to walk that not require a muzzle or them eating things. I know the different type of muzzles because I have learned about them in class.

I would be very careful using that method because it can be misused. I would teach leave it. It’s very normal for dog to put bugs and stuff in their mouth.

Obviously you don't know ALL about muzzles as you said in a previous post that a dog can't breath in a cage muzzle, just sayin. So I'll just be done posting here as it seems to me that your way is the Only way. By the way I was a vet Tech for yrs & I happen to know a thing or 2 about muzzles myself & I also know about DEATH from toxic plants & bugs as well & watching a dog die needlessly from either one is not a pretty sight. And another thing, not ALL dogs eat bugs

Piper responds to 'leave it' inside, but outside is a whole 'nother matter and she'll keep on at whatever she's doing. A quick shot from a regular squirt gun causes her to shift her focus long enough for me to intercede.

I’m sad we can’t just have an open conversation about this without anger. There is no perfect solutions and we must realize each has their pros and cons. I never said I knew all about muzzles. I’m just not a fan of muzzles unless a last resort. The concern you seemed to ignore is what is a pretty big issue these days is the dog can not protect its self if another attacks if it has a muzzle on. I have found many safe areas to walk my dogs without issue. Concrete or even nice side walks generally aren’t full of poisonous stuff and it helps grind their nails down. Lots of dogs eat bugs or in my youngests case throws them around and plays with them. In the northeast there are less poisonous things then in other areas. I have had dogs all my life and never had a poisoning issue on a walk.

One thing I had to do with each of mine is work with them outside as well as inside because it does seem like they can get something inside but need more training with stuff outside.

That's for dang sure! My vet told me early-on that these little Yorkies are 'bomb proof' meaning that if they're focused on something it's very difficult to get their attention. Piper is a prime example of that!

Yep that’s why I will never let mine off leash unless in a fenced in area because they might see a rabbit or something else and that will take their attention. My two little ones stalk each other and once they are in stalk mood there is no stopping them.

I'm sooo glad to hear you say that because non-Yorkie dog people think I'm overly-protective, overly-cautious, but I know Piper and she simply cannot be off-leash due to her nature. I'm still learning not to take her total disregard of me personally...!!

Even Callie at 10 as chilled out as she is now I won’t let her off leash out of the fence it just only takes a second for something to happen. My youngest two would probably be under my dad’s garage trying to hunt rabbits. My aunts and uncles on my dad’s side don’t get it either they let their dogs run free all the time and it scares me.
