| General Hi everyone! We recently got a little Yorkie he is 6 months old we have had him a few months and we are madly in love with him. I had a few questions just in general he has more energy than we expected lol and has no fear at all but he always coughs like he has a hair ball. I was also curious about his weight he might weigh 2 lbs now. Our vet says he is very healthy but just wanted to hear from others on personal experiences. Thank you all in advance. Gucci thanks you too. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi - welcome and congrats on your kiddo ! If there is this much coughing, there is a reason. Definitely capture the coughing on your phone's video camera and show it to the vet ASAP. If this is kennel cough, it can progress to pnuemonia in puppies, which is dangerous...

| I would let the vet check out the coughing.

| Ours had a cough like that when we first got her. It took a while for it to go away, though the vet never gave anything for it. As for the energy, you have to realize that you got a Terrierist on your hands. They are highly alert and moderately to highly intelligent. There is a reason that every time the AKC introduces the Jack Russell and Parsons Terriers at the dog show they preface it with "While not for everyone, these high energy Terriers...."

| I got my Tibbe at 9 mos. of age and he occas. made a throat sound as if he were trying to clear a hairball or something from his throat. That has continued and now that he's almost 10, the hacking is a bit more frequent, with additional hacking sometimes after drinking water or barking a lot. I fear he's got some early stage of collapsing trachea though the vet has never diagnosed it. He's also had his share of reverse sneezing, though that was a lot more frequent the first 5 years. Once his diet was changed for MVD Dx., and probiotics added to his food, his RS has practically stopped. Tibbe has had yearly dental cleanings and I'm told he's been placed under general anesthesia for each of the 9 cleanings he's had. Wouldn't CT have been noticed during any intubation?

| Lucky Gucci! Lucky you! Quote:
A yorkie puppy is about the most wonderful experience you can have. So fun. So full of love and energy. Spend a lot of time holding, cuddling, and training and you'll be rewarded 10 fold. I am constantly amazed at the ability of a yorkie to relate to us as people. Our little girl knows us probably better than we know her! As I have read all the comments in the forums, hacking and coughing seem to be a yorkie trait. Our little girl as she has learned to regulate herself seemed to know it got our attention and now uses her hack to get our attention. So, by all means rule out illness or structural stuff but don't let it cause you stress. A lot of yorkies are bred to be small. Ours is 4 lb 5 oz at 2.5 years old. She's smaller boned. We actually looked for a breeder with pups more likely to be smaller dogs for my sake but steered clear of deliberate breeding for teacup size. However, we knew when we got her that the size of the parents is no guarantee of a smaller dog and we were fine with that. Your little guy will likely grow to 4 to 5 lbs of perfection. Enjoy Gucci! Life will be an adventure from now on. | |

| I'm going to suggest it's what Chewie does, and we were concerned at first, too. We were fortunate that the vet was looking her overr when an incident happened. Her inverted sneezes DO sound like she's hacking up a hairball. We know that she's unique in that, because her little "best friend" sounds similar but not so much. I hope it's just that. |

YT 500 Club Member | Our little Ruger hacks often after playing hard and after drinking a lot of water all at once. Not sure why, but when he calms down he's fine. And oh YES lots & lots of energy. Seems they never will be still. lOL
