Default need advice on my tea cup yorkie!!!!

We, recently acquired a small tea cup yorkie, last Thursday a friends dog was over at our house for a visit, the visiting dog got sick in our kitchen, I immediately cleaned it up with bleach water and paper towels. Then on Sunday, we find out that the same dog, was very sick with Parvo and his owner didn't think he would make it through the night. ( she did not make, passed away sometime early Monday ). My lil Lance was suppose to go later Monday for his final set of shots, when we arrived at the vets office, I did inform them that they was a possibility of him being exposed to Parvo, and they decided with that being said, to go ahead and give him his shots as a precaution. he was fine all day Monday afternoon, was eating playing and being his normal lil self. I wake up Tuesday to him throwing a lil bit of white foamy slimy stuff, call the vet and she has me bring him in. we do a Parvo test, and it has a ver faint blue dot, according to the vet the stronger the blue dot, the more prominent the Parvo is. now that being said, she said she did not think he had Parvo but was just a reaction to the booster he received the day before, but went ahead and gave him some meds for vomitting and antibiotics. I get him back home (still Tuesday) I give him the antibotic as she said and he sleep almost all day with out hardly moving, Coe Tuesday night, he finally starts eating a lil bit and drinking and seems to be improving greatly. wake up Wednesday morning to him acting confused and posted, he was a lil unstable while walking and fell off the bed and the couch while trying to get to his spots.i then again call the vet asking about his behavior and if this was completely normal after giving him the antivomitting meds and antibiotic. she told me that we needed to bring him back in. upon arriving, they have decided to do blood work and a abc panel. everything came back in the normal range with the exception of his protien which was low ( probably from not eating) and his sugar was 222,(probably from me giving him kyero syrup a hour before arriving). and they sent us home telling me that he is probably just stressed and tried. the rest of the day he doesn't do much but sleep, didn't eat much nor did he drink much so at 3 am before we went to bed I gave him some honey to insure that his sugar didn't get too low. wake up today (Thursday) to him vomiting clear kind of foam stuff and had had an accident on the bed, consenting of a lil soft firm poop trying to liquid at the end. call the vet and go back out there, where they re ran all the same blood test as Wednesday and re did a Parvo snap that they did on Tuesday. all blood work showed normal with exception of his protein ( still low and around the same level as Wednesday) and his sugar was only 22 (the day before it was 222). the Parvo test was a much darker blue than on Tuesday, so they decided to hopsitalize him. ( this was at 9am) we leave my baby there and at 1 pm I call to check on him. the lady tells me that he is doing fine and he is back there barking. she puts me on hold and comes to tell me that he is alert and sitting in his kennel barking at everyone. I go pick him cup at 5:30pm to transport him over to the emerncgy after hour clinic, he was excited at first to see me, but that was very short lasted because just as soon as we turned around to walk out the door he was back to being lifeless and slept the way to the next clinic. while there, we discuss everything that the original vet told me and I leave. at 8:09 the emercngy clinic calls telling me that his sugar is extremely low and that they had to give him a shot of sugar and added a bag of sugar to his iv. the whole problem I have now after doing much research is, with all his blood work being normal( white count and red count) does he really have Parvo? or are we really dealing with hypoglycemia? everything that I have read and everyone I have talked too says that if it was really Parvo, the white count (even given the fact he has been on antibiotics since Tuesday morning) would not being showing normal. Could we be treating him for something he really never had and neglecting the fact that we have stressed his lil 2.5 lb body to the point that he is now fighting a sugar issue? any help or thought on this would be greatly appreciated

Antibiotics don't work with parvo so I'm not sure why your vet even gave them to him. If he does have parvo and can't keep food down that could possibly cause hypoglycemia issues. If he does have parvo there is no treatment for it, it just has to run its course and all they can do it try to treat the issue it causes. Also your home is now a parvo zone and anything that puppy and possibly the owner come in contact with is infected. It's probably a wait and see kinda thing. Hope he makes it.

yes Parvo is a highly contagious virus. Antibiotics have zero affect on a virus but are often given for secondary bacterial infections The treatment for parvo is supportive care dehydration prevention, etc
sending healing vibes for your little one please update us when you can

I don't think secondary infections are common with Parvo.

actually: Dogs who catch Parvovirus usually die from the dehydration it causes or secondary infection rather than the virus itself. any updates on this little one in the OP?

We have gone over parvo in my vet assistant class several times and secondary infection never popped up. They can get dehydrated and possibly anemic depending if they have the bloody diarrhea and how much. When we went over protocol antibiotics never came up and I have never heard in other parvo cases of antibiotics being given. They normally hospitalize the patient and treat the symptoms that pop up like the dehydration, the vomiting, the diarrhea, and glucose if they seem to have a sugar issue. Then as the pup gets stronger they try a tiny bit of food. Parvo causes the dehydration and other symptoms so it is the parvo that kills them.

Im a little confused as to the age of the dog since it seems a little strange to have a puppy on a couch unattended to fall. I have 10 weeks old babies right now and all the doggy steps are put up. Maybe because I have tile floors, but a fall from a couch could be fatal.

Anyway, I've heard of false weak negatives when test is done 1 to 2 weeks after vaccination. I also have heard of precautionary antibiotics because the lining of the gastrointestinal tract is severely affected and the lining is sloughed leaving it open to infection; however, antibiotics can also cause vomiting and diarrhea which may add to a problem. I also don't know if I agree with vaccinating a dog who might possibly have parvo. In my opinion, I wouldn't want to overload an immune system that may be fighting a serious virus. I am assuming this was a 16 week vaccination you gave and the previous one was at 12 weeks. In a percentage of puppies, 3 to 5 days after the 12 week vaccine they have produced antibodies, but of course always do the next at 16 weeks just to make sure. You don't mention total lack of appetite and not drinking and also the profuse bloody diarrhea so it is possible he doesn't have it. Antibiotics definitely could cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea and then if puppy wasn't eating every 8 hours maximum it could be a sugar problem. It really doesn't sound like parvo to me since you didn't mention bloody diarrhea or total avoidance of food/water and also being fine one minute and not the next. Hope he continues to do well. Please post updates so others can gain from your experience.

PS Hi Lacey s Mom - I had to do a double take cause I didn't remember posting. lol

cool that your taking classes..I also was an animal health tech before I advanced my career...its very rewarding! and yes parvo attacks the Gastrointestinal tract causing bloody diarrhea, profound vomiting, it attacks WBC immune system is compromised and yes dehydration is profound sad to see these babies suffer so you can research beyond the classroom there is a ton of info out there..have a great day I'm moving on lol

I just don't think antibiotics are normal to be given when there is a diagnosis of parvo so I thought it was weird that's all. I have definitely read up on it as well as what I learned in class. Never saw anything about antibiotics. It concerns me though that I have seen so many posts about parvo lately it's scary.

no the breeder gave his first set of shots at 6weeks and then told us to continue at 10 weeks and 14 weeks ( last Monday) this coming week he will be 15 weeks and our couch is only at most 2 feet from the ground, he likes to sit on a big king size blanket while on the couch that always hangs off providing like a big squishy cushion on the floor. however, he was transferred from the after hour clinic this morning very well alert and exciting to see us, we arrived at the primary vet and he was doing ok, maybe a lil mad at me cause he was back at the vet, but when I checked on him at 1 today his sugar was 124 and he was alert and barking at everyone, when my boyfriend called at 3, same thing. We arrived at 430 to pick him and transfer back to after hour clinic, he was trying to run around and almost acting his normal lil self, but the vet was saying he needed to be transported back to after hour clinic because he now wasn't eating or showing any interest in any food. When we arrived at after hours and asked how he could be doing so great at the normal vet and then always doing so awful with them, they didn't want to discuss it much which in turned turned out with us leaving with baby in tow. he is now home with us, and since been home, has managed to show his normal lil self for a hour or so before going back to his bed and acting depressed and sickly, after about 30 mins or so he is back in the living room, showing signs of playfulness, but not eating, he will drink a lil though. so we are going to take shift monitoring him and making sure nothing drastic changes and hope that after being home in his normal environment he will start improving drastically. as I am still not really sure he even has Parvo... still no bloody diaherea and just every now and then about a teaspoon of what looks like stomach acid now. thanks for all the advise. and will keep updated

Often with medicine, what one learns in the classroom is totally different that what is seen or happens in the medical office.

UPDATE: after a long night of 1 cc of Karo syrup every hour and 1 cc of pedilyte every 2 hours, lance finally started eating on his around 3am... when I went to sleep and my boyfriend took over watch, he woke me at 9am and Lance is in his pen, walking around eating the ground beef and drinking water on his own. I not sure we are in the clear yet, but his is showing vast signs of improvement.

This was posted on another thread about parvo.... everything I have read from reliable sources states an antibiotic is prescribed. Maybe this is beyond what they have learned in class and what works in the practices.

I just hadn't heard about it. I definitely will ask my instructor. We have over the years had several big parvo out breaks. It ended up tracing back to the Amish lying on papers saying puppies had been vetted when they haven't and they sell them at the market. Sadly multiple times over 100 puppies have had to be put to sleep.

I'm not sure he has parvo. I think I would look at a different vet to get a second opinion. I think something else might be going on. Shots done at 6 weeks are useless because of immunity from the mothers milk. He is probably throwing up bike from not eating.
