| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Try to groom when he is relaxed, has less energy. Use massage to relax him and to make grooming a positive experience. Make sure you are not tugging at his skin when you comb or brush. Hold the hair in one hand and comb in the other to prevent skin tugging. You can also try giving him a safe chew to distract him while you groom. Be patient and confident. Give lots of praise and rewards.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Brushing the tummy can be very sensitive, so you have to either be super super gentle...gaining trust along the way...or, you have to trim the hair very close to the tummy and leave it like that.

| If you are not confident with grooming your Yorkie it is advisable to get the help of an expert. Bring your Yorkie to a grooming salon because they can better handle your beloved dog. When it comes to simple brushing the hair make sure she is relax so you will not have a hard time doing it. |

| When I first got Piper, I used a human baby brush--certainly not effective for tangles, etc., but it's very soft and I just wanted her to get used to the notion of being brushed. These days she especially loves having her little belly "brushed" and in fact, rolls around so that's pretty much all that gets brushed! You might try lightly using a baby brush just to get him used to the idea...? |

| THIS!!!! We have two dogs with very fine hair that mats super easy. I just use a very short guard, 3/8" to 1/2", and shave their entire under carriage front to back, chest, belly, arm pits, inside areas of their legs. Some areas, scissors are the only way to go though. When they walk, you can't even tell(when I leave the rest of the hair long). Maybe ask your groomer about doing that. Recently, I found a dog, I just used scissors and gave her under carriage a shave to get all of the mats out while I was camping. It just takes time and patience. It's hair, it grows back if you make a mistake. Just don't get the skin! If they are too squirmy, just stop, let them calm down, try again later. |

| I did the same as Jkpal. I used a human baby brush for the longest time at first. I also keep my girl's hair pretty short so a brush like that was actually useful. I now switched to a soft bristled pet brush that's slightly more firmer. Martha stewart sells a plush bristle brush with soft wide bristles and top paw by conair has a soft bristled brush with a gel handle (which is what I got). But yea she loves her belly brushed with the soft bristles.

| I am actually a dog groomer. The above suggestions are great! As owners of Yorkie's, we all know that they have a very strong stubborn personality. This can make grooming them a bit difficult. The best advice I can give you is to try to go slow. Stay relaxed. Your pup isn't going to like it at first, just keep going and keep rewarding. It'll take time. In regards to grooming, maybe ask the groomer to take the belly shorter. That won't be very obvious, and will create less for you to brush out while you are trying to get your pup more comfortable with the home brushing. As far as his feet go, just cuddle him and hold him at night while massaging each of his paws. That will really eventually help. Last edited by griffy; 06-23-2016 at 08:48 PM. |
