| We found our baby! So excited, come May we will have a little Biewer joining our family! My daughter has already named her Scarlett! She was just born this past weekend and we are over the moon!! Now it's time to research training, food, treats, safety, etc... A few questions... Do some people exclusively use pee pads and never really house-train? Can you do a mix? Pee pads at night, outside during the day? I don't really know how all that works, I have only ever had medium to big dogs. At what age would I start house-training? In another post someone mentioned "baby proofing", what type of things should I do to prepare for the puppy's arrival? Any other tips that you wish someone had told you? |

| Is there a reason you don't want to train her to go only outside if you have done your other doggies that way? I only ask because I have met so many people that ask if my gal is pad trained because she is small, but from the time we got her, we just trained to go outside. |

| Congratulations on your soon to be new little baby, Biewers are such a beautiful breed. As far as training, do you want your pup to be an inside dog only or do you want her to potty only out side? Limit her space, do not give her free roam of your home until she is 100 % potty trained, always supervise when she is not in her confined space. Confining her is also a safety measure so she doesn't get hurt. I had puppies at 8 weeks old, what I did was place their paper (no pee pads then lol) in the area you want them to potty. Potty training starts the day you bring the baby home. She pees someplace take the pee pad, absorb the pee, place the pad back take the baby and place her on the pad using the command words pee pee on the pad (or what ever word you use). when she poops someplace, pick up the poop, place it on the pad, get the baby, put her on the pad with the poop and use command words poo poo on the pad. You must be consistent and patient, no yelling, no loud voice, just a firm pee-pee, poo poo on the paid. All my puppies were 100% paper trained at 5 months old. I wanted my dogs to potty outside only, when they were 100% paper trained with NO accidents I then started to train for outside. I fed them at 7AM, walked them at 7:30 AM even if they already did their business on the paper I still walked them at 7:30. Dogs have built in clocks, dogs are creatures of habit. Feed same time every day, walk same time every day. I went to work, came home at 4:30 even if they had made on the paper they were walked everyday at 4:30, Fed at 5PM, walked at 6PM, 10PM I just took them to the curb for their last pee pee and then it was bed time. At 7 months old they were 100% house broken with no accidents in the house. The key word is consistency. She will get use to eating at a certain time and that little built in clock will tell her when it is walk time, she will hold it until she is walked. Rain, sleet, hail, snow, they were walked. This is how I trained ALL my pups, this is what worked for me and my own personal experience. There are members that their dogs are outside dogs but will use potty pads. My now adopted boy, was 2.5 yo when I got him, his prev. owner walk him, he was a surrender dog and came with a shopping bag of his belongings. In that bag I found a pee pad so I knew they had used them for him. He makes outside only, he whines to let me know mama I need to pee pee or poop, I have a yard now, I let him out, I am ALWAYS with him when he goes outside When I know I will be out for several hours I will put down a pee pad for him. He will not use it, he will wait for me to come home. Dogs prefer to do their business out doors, so many yummy smells to be sniffed. Baby proofing your home is a term I use, meaning, if you have nick nacks in low place that a pup can reach, remove them, they may want to play with them, or chew on them even just carry it in their mouth. if you have exposed stereo, tv, play station, lamp wires, as hard as this may be try to get them up off the floor, puppy can, may, will chew on them. I used a plastic pole cover that is used on shower rods, they came in all colors, had a slit all the way down to be able to wrap around the shower rod I really do not know if they still sell these. I put all my stereo, TV. play station, lamp wires inside this plastic pole cover, it worked for me. I am sure other members will be along to offer up ideas, suggestions, advise. Good luck and many happy years with your Biewer, they are ppl stoppers lol, just a gorgeous breed. Please keep us posted on her new life with your family, we all LOVE puppy stories AND PICTURES lol. (((hugs)))

| So I responded but I obviously am not very good at using this site, because none of my responses showed up. Lovestiny: No specific reason, mostly that she will come to us used to pads and I have heard that house training small dogs can be hard. I will be home with her all day so I thought that I could be on top of outdoor training then but at night might be more difficult. Thank you for your tip, definitely adding those to my list!!! Matese: Oh my gosh, THANK YOU SO MUCH! I love to have a plan of action and I love your plan, thank you for giving so much detail! I would of never thought to absorb the pee and put her on the pad to let her know that's where pee goes. Thank you so much! |

My boys are pad and outdoor trained. They have a pad at all times in our home, but they would gladly go outdoors given the opportunity. They also know that the pad is at our house but not other houses, and not public places. Whichever method you use, limit roaming freedom in your home while training. Supervise, be consistent, reward with lots of praise and small treat (we use a couple pieces of kibble). My boys are adults and we still praise and reward. Puppy proofing: I recommend an xpen for when you cannot supervise your pup. We used the xpen for the first year. Make sure there are no choking hazards within reach, no food, no toxic plants that could drop leaves or flowers to the floor. Place power cords out of reach. We also put baby covers in all of our outlets.

| Zoey is trained to use the pee pads or go outside. She doesn't like being outside too much so the pads work great for us. When she first started on pads and I took her outside to do her business she would pee but hold her poop until we came back in the house and then do it on the pads. Finally, she figured out it was ok to poop in the yard. Lol. Congrats on little Scarlett.

| Ok so I am seeing what's happening, all my none quick replies have to be approved by a moderator probably since I am new? So sorry if there will be double replies! (oops!) Maximo- Are you saying that I if I am going to do pads at night I should have them available during the day too, so I don't confuse them? Just clarifying! I will definitely get a pen. Thanks so much for the suggestion!! Cherie6446- Thank you! |

I got Scottie at 5 months and started him outdoor potty training right away. It's best to train right away (for everything, even basic commands). And I'll also add that you can consider starting to brush her teeth. They're more susceptible to it the younger you start! I started brushing Scottie's teeth as soon as many people (strangers I met during dog walks) who told me their yorkies lost all their teeth by ages 2 (and up)!
