Default Need Help

My chewie is eating, playing, going potty on the pad inside and outside. The problem is, since the second day, she won't drink from a bowl.

I FINALLY got her to drink- even after the suggestions from her trainer to just leave water, with low sodium chicken broth, and my husband decided to mix mostly water with it, and she is now refusing THAT.

I am tired and scared. I have tried four different bowls, that little water bottle that rabbits drink out of. I switched to wet food BECAUSE she wasn't drinking. She's peeing and pooping, but I know it's not NEARLY enough.

I really need some suggestions.

Not drinking water would be a pretty big deal. Don't want Chewie to get dehydrated! So...she hasn't drank water for 2 days?

How about purified/filtered water instead of tap water? Was Chewie on dry kibble prior to wet food? I know that after Scottie eats his kibble, he must drink water ...30 min to 1 hr later because he's dying of thirst.

Hopefully it's not a health-related issue. Will leave others with more experience to comment on that..

When you said you tried 4 different bowls, I assume you mean different materials? Stainless steel, plastic, ceramic, etc..

Magnus prefers fresh cold water so he'll wait for it when he's not very thirsty. Also, one of my friend's pup won't drink water when he's outside unless it's "pouring". So my friend would cup her hand while pouring the water out of the bottle. I did hear some dogs love drinking "fresh moving water". Maybe if this method works, you can get her a water fountain.

As I've said before, my Zeusy is very persnickety about smell (hates the smell of canned food and won't eat it). He WILL NOT drink the tap water where I live (I can smell the chlorine and don't drink it either), so he is a water snob and gets bottled water. It took me awhile to figure out his problem. He was trying to drink my bottled water while he was in my lap. I have him some of it in his bowl, and he guzzled it. Like Magnus, my Zeusy prefers refrigerator cold bottled water. He will drink it at room temperature, but prefers the cold. If you try all the tricks and the vet can't find anything wrong, you may try one of the bottle feeders where they "lick" the water out of the bottle. Good luck!

I moved her to wet food- 78% moisture because of the issue at hand. She's tried the bottles to lick. On sunday she drank like a fiend when she was outside- out of one of our cups. she's taken exactly 7 laps each day, once in the morning and once at night, and then half an icecube or through a syringe/paper towel before bed. She's been peeing, pooping, playing, and been looked at by a vet. Nothing is wrong with her, other than she flat out refuses to drink water any more than what's available to her, since I've moved the food to unavailable, except for 3 x a day. I moved her food from first thing in the morning to 10am. that got her to lap up the broth at 7am and again at 10am. When her food isn't out, water is constantly available to her. The gerbil/rabbit bottle doesn't work, nor does any other bowl that I can think of. She's simply not sick. That's not her issue, it's the fact she flat out refuses to drink anything from a bowl OR bottle. The trainer told me "eventually" she'll drink, and he was right- to an extent. Still not much. If she was dehydrated she wouldn't pee, but since I've moved her to wet canned food, that's no longer an issue. I was wondering if any one had a dog that hated water and wouldn't drink it. I've tried ice. Cold water. Tap water, bottled water, warm, cold, luke warm. I'm reaching the end of my rope.

she was on royal canine and then stopped eating it. We gave her canned food that pet smart carries, um.... Earth grain? She WAS drinking from a paper towel all the time, and then she was also drinking water on our lap. that's since stopped. We've seen her guzzle the broth several times today, but after eating the wet canned food nothing for hours. I've read up on this and was told all these suggestions, but I'm getting to the point where I'm weepy, because I can't get her to stop this. I've even encouraged her to walk with the leash. she's super playful and cuddly- she even pees/poops on her pad an outside. I just don't understand a dog that will NOT drink water. She pees a LOT but I know it would be more if she was drinking more. My husband tells me that it's from the dog food, it has so much water in it she's not thirsty. I certainly hope so. Otherwise, I have to try the vet- again- and wait in the lobby. They don't take appointments.

no- I'll try that. Thank you. Chicken broth is working somewhat, and I've heard Karo syrup and the puppy formula.

update: I am going to try your suggestion with the dry food to the letter. I tried her royal canin today at dinner in anticipation of this. I think you're REALLY on to something and I can't thank you enough. She did some lapping up and I'm hoping that the cold water in the bowl in a few minutes will encourage her to drink. I'll give you an update after he breakfast tomorrow.
