"RETRIEVE Dog nose-targets four different objects including a dumbell, on one cue each. DISCUSSION: Most trainers divide dogs into "natural" retrievers, and dogs who don't retrieve. All kinds of harsh methods have been devised to force non-retrievers to retrieve. These methods have turned off more potential dog trainers than any other part of training. Fear not! It is NOT necessary to do nasty things to dogs to produce a reliable retrieve. Even dogs who have never thought to voluntarily pick up a twig or a toy can be taught to enjoy retrieving." The rest is here scroll to the bottom: Training Level THREE A | Mind to Mind Beginer targeting is started here about half way down: http://sue-eh.ca/page24/page26/styled/

| ![]() Yep, I'm using targeting to get her to do it! I've got a reliable send to the dummy. She'll put her mouth on it. Pick it up. But not quite return it to me yet. It's coming along. She has returned it a few times, and we had a party when she did, but it's not reliable yet and then I will have to generalize the behavior to things other than her dummy. |

I wish Scottie was like that. I had to train him to have an interest in the toys I bought him (he wouldn't touch them at first when he was a puppy) and then train more for him to fetch stuff so he would 'exercise' when I'm too lazy to move.. ![]()

| ![]() I have two yorkies. One who is a ball fetching fool, the other could not care less about toys or balls. Couver LIVES for fetch. I have to cut him off so that he doesn't over exert himself when we play fetch. He also does not share, so we do not play fetch at the dog park because he gets possessive. He knows his sister doesn't want his ball, but he doesn't get that other dogs do not care about it, and he will bite any dog that gets near him during ball time. Luckily we know this is a trigger for him, so we just avoid it ![]() Khloe on the other hand, has NO interest and very rarely can I get her excited enough to even put a toy in her mouth. It's like she thinks thinks she's above it. It's so funny how different yorkie personalities are!

Zoey will run to the top and nudge her ball down .....bouncey , bounce, bounce, bounce , bounce......to me ....trying to cook or do dishes...lol ...trying to teach Izzy to " go get it" and take it back to her sister ...lol!

| ![]() Lola loves all balls, you name it small rubber balls, tennis balls, basket balls, footballs, and even my large exercise ball. It's to the point that when I want to exercise with it I have to lock her out of the room, she come running at it head butting it right out of my hands. I attached a short video of her with the exercise ball. If we are in a park or out for a walk and come across kids playing basketball or football she tries so hard to get in the middle of it. They always let her play for a while but of course the ball is to big, I normally have to carry her away while she is looking back and almost crying. One time we were docked on our ski boat and she spotted some guys tossing a football in the water, she dove off the boat and swam so fast out to where they were. She also now dock dives when we toss the ball or toy in the water, she will fetch till the cows come home, never gets tired of it. She is 5 and we keep waiting for her to slow down ![]() https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jj8RTz1dWd4

| ![]() for those of you that have dogs that love balls have you seen the little rubber ones with the spikes that light up when rolled around. We have a lot of them and it is so funny to watch Lola with it, we play inside a lot and it is funny to toss it towards a dark area in the house and then she sees the light flashing and when she picks it up you can see it flashing in her mouth. it's a great toy because it is hard but not to hard and as long as she has played with it and squeaked it has never broken. It also bounces pretty good. I bought mine at a big superstore called Meijer but I know Meijer's is not everywhere so I don't know who else sells them

| ![]() Jackson had to be taught. He was not naturally a big fetcher. But now he LOVES it... I've built up his drive enough to play almost anywhere. I use the ChuckIt and he just loves it. Such great exercise. He barks at me to throw the ball lol. But it was not naturally engrained in him- I did use small treats as rewards for bringing it back and it was a somewhat slow process. Now he can even catch frisbees! He'll never be a Border Collie frisbee catching maniac but he enjoys it enough that it's fun for both of us. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nIGjuLrkTQ
