Ball driven Yorkies I was wondering if anyone else has a yorkie who loves their ball? I jokingly say that Capone "lives" for the ball. I have read online that this has alot to do with the dog's prey instinct, some dogs inherit this trait where others do not. I know these instinct are very strong in retrievers or other working dog breeds, but I wanted to know if anyone else's furbabies are as obsessed withplaying fetch with their ball as mine is? |
Mario initially would retrieve NOTHING. No interest whatsoever. Then came "bear bear" the kong felt knot bear. He loves that thing, and will fetch it for long periods. Other toys, I think he just studies the aerodynamics of them as they fly through the air, then he studies my efficiency at fetching and cleaning them all up. |
Haha,I can relate from every other small dog ive had would just look at me like I was crazy if I attempted to play fetch with them. Capone only likes squeaky balls (preferably bouncy squeaky balls). He loves pulling everysingle toy out of the toy box but doesn't seem to have the same enthusiasm when it come to putting them back up. |
My furbaby is obsessed with her purple squeaky ball it's the first thing she runs to get when she wakes up. She will play fetch non stop for hours,as long as I'm willing to. Also the minute I stop playing she lies down with the ball and pouts! Silly girl she's so full of energy. |
Max loves to play fetch but that is probably because he gets a treat every time he fetches it. He will actually reward himself. I am not in the mood to play, he will fling the ball across the room himself, go fetch it, walk to his food bowl with the ball, drop it and get a piece of food! |
Lexi is a ball lover. Her little green ball is her favorite. Anytime my feet are standing in one place for one second, the ball is being dropped for me to kick or throw. If I sit down, she brings the ball. She will set the ball right beside me, then stare at me until I throw it. If I kick it she will retrieve it so fast, it's like we are playing soccer and she's a very good goalie. She really loves her bouncy balls. |

When we throw a toy or a ball, they look at us as if to say... "that was dumb, now you have to go get it!!!" I wish they would fetch. It's great exercise! Lol! I have mean girls stuck in my head. "Stop trying to make fetch happen, it's not gonna happen." :p |
Sophie is crazy for what use to be my kids small soccer ball . When she's playing with it she's in her own little world she doesn't pay attention to anything else around her |
A bit off topic, but I used to have a Rhodesian Ridgeback dog (105lbs). His favorite ball to play with was a bowling ball LOL. He would roll it around then spend hours licking inside the finger holes *bleah* |

I had given up on Mario fetching, but somehow we stumbled upon "bear bear". Fetch for us is a vital training tool as well, so I was wracking my brain trying to come up with a way, until I had all but given up. He will also fetch his stuffed penguin now. Both have squeakers in them. Not sure why he will get those but nothing else, but heck, I am just glad we found something he will fetch. |
O-B-S-E-S-S-E-D that sums it up! Deuce is obsessed with playing fetch with a ball but he will play with other toys that will fly through the air except a frisbee. When he gets the ball he squeaks it and pushes it around, shakes it and sometimes throws it and then rolls over with it in his mouth and plays with it for a while and then runs back for another go of it. He likes when we fake throw it somewhere in the house or to another level and hide it. He loves hunting it out. We play this game with him everyday from about 3:30 until he eats dinner at around 5. He absolutely expects this every day. It's like he knows how to tell time no matter what day of the week it is. Now that ball or toy gets W-E-T from drool and his face is such a mess. Sometimes we have to switch the toy with another because it's so wet and messy to throw. He's not always happy about the switch but we try to get a good squeaker one to distract him with. He can't wait until the weather gets warmer so we can play in the yard. Here's a little video I did a few years ago. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_dxFnUvD_c |
Beowulf plays fetch with ANY toy doesn't matter:D actually anyTHING I have to try not to toss things in front of him cause he'll think I'm trying to play fetch:rolleyes: |

Nope. No interest at all lol. I am trying to train her to retrieve for her service dog stuff and competition obedience. It's going well, but slow. |
I cannot get Cooper really interested in anything. If I throw something, he looks at it.. then at me like... what? He is terrified of anything that squeaks and tug of war is crazy as far as he is concerned. Strangest little one I've ever had. He is 6 months old, maybe playing will come later? |
