| ![]() Hi guys! My girl is about 18months old and I've decided to get her fixed! She's about 5lbs now and I was just wondering- would spaying her make her larger? I've heard of many stories in which they do. In my experience, I neutered my other dog at 8months and he was 5lbs now he's 10lbs! ![]() Also, is there a risk in spaying while she is in heat? The tech said she may be still in heat and the doctor needs to confirm. ![]() Thanks for your inputs ![]()

| ![]() There may be a little weight gain after spaying, but vets swear "no".....all of mine that have been spayed have put on weight, but I have issues with hungry animals and feed too much! There are issues and vets seldom will spay when the pup is in heat...wait until system returns to normal, about 4-6 weeks, before spaying.....that is what most vets will tell you. Bleeding can be an issue when pup is in heat and surgery is done....all the reproductive organs are engorged with blood....most vets wont get in there and muck around unless it would be an emergency...... |

![]() I called the vet and the doctor isn't there yet but they told me that if she's in heat it won't affect her- however, hearing your input makes me worried! Maybe I should take her back and not get her spayed right now.. ![]()

| ![]() I wouldnt spay her in the middle of a heat cycle....some vets will do any procedure at any time....I have too many really great vets wait until after heat cycle is over and organs are no longer engorged with blood.....just dont let her get bred! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | ![]() Anything is possible, I suppose, since every dog is so individual. But personally, I have not seen any weight gain at all in any of my 4 due to being fixed. As long as you make sure you're feeding her correctly AND she's active and getting exercised, she should be just fine.

I'll be watching her diet and such I was just curious if her overall frame would change and she'd get larger. Don't get me wrong, I'd love her regardless, I just want to be prepared mentally haha.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Magic formula for ALL of us, right??!!!!! I do not think "SPAYING" automatically goes hand and hand with weight gain! Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 02-05-2016 at 11:09 AM. | |

| ![]() I agree. Don't spay during heat. When I had a Siberian Husky, I had her spayed after I *thought* her first heat was over. (She had stopped bleeding, but I hadn't waited enough time.) I was wrong, and after the spay, the vet cussed me out royally and told me that her reproductive organs were engorged with blood, and there could have been complications from bleeding. The vet should be able to tell the OP how long to wait after the heat before it's completely safe to spay, but if the vet is saying that it doesn't make any difference, it might be time to look for another vet... |

| ![]() Zoey was spayed at 7 months, she is now 16 months old and only weighs 2 lbs and 10 ounces. She is still very tiny, I have always free fed her and still do. Unless she gains too much weight I will always free feed her. I guess it depends on the individual dog as to whether or not they gain weight after spaying. |

| ![]() #1 change vets!!! #2, I think that most people who DO spay and neuter are responsible pet owners and do so when the dog is still a pup/not fully matured. So no matter how big your pup is at time of spay, if it's not fully matured (2 years perhaps) your pup WILL gain weight bc it hasn't finished growing! Your pup neutered at 8 months would have put on more weight regardless if he was neutered or not; he wasn't done growing yet!

| ![]() My dog was 4 when she was spayed and the vet said to wait until 3 months after last cycle to make sure there wasn't a phantom pregnancy. She has since gained about 100 grams but is very active and eats healthy foods. |
