| 7 year old Yorker aggressive to German shepherd puppy I've had a Yorkie for the past seven years and I just recently adopted a shepherd chow mix. Whenever the puppy tries to initiate play, the Yorkie bares her teeth and attacks. She also mistakes us playing with the puppy for aggression and rushes to defend us. My Yorkie was exposed to other dogs as a puppy and got along fine but when she met one nippy chihuahua she completely changed. She still plays well the the dogs she met before but can't seem to make any new friends. She is curious though, she's always trying to sneak a sniff in and whenever she starts attacking she farts every time. I just want them to get song since they're going to be spending a lot of time together and also I don't want the shepherd to get older and snap on my little Yorkie. Any suggestions or thoughts? |

| She's likely jealous. I have one that gets jealous easily, even with her "brother" who's been with us for more than 3 years. We foster occasionally and Uni is wondering when Toto will leave! (He's not.) Uni was with us first, so she prefers to be an only child, though she does play with other dogs, bc she knows they are not staying, or they are just friends she meets at the park. I would suggest to give attention to the yorkie first. Greet her first, feed her first, etc. The puppy will learn the order. I'm sure the puppy will also learn quickly that he is bigger than her and play more softly, as many large dog/small dog households do, but you have to make sure she doesn't get too aggressive and piss him off bc one little swipe or bite and she can really get hurt.

| I think it is a good idea that the Yorkie sets the boundaries now before the other dog gets any bigger. Just saying. . .

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | You can see by my avatar I have very large dogs and one Yorkie. I would say that a GSD and Chow mix is not the breed I would have selected to match with a Yorkie. The GSD as a breed usually has high prey drive and a Chow is not known for being dog friendly...... What-ever, what is done is done now and so you need to learn to deal with it. The Yorkie needs to learn to STOP being aggressive to the puppy = and that you need to teach by immediately correcting the behaviour and creating time outs etc. The Yorkie should always have a safe haven to go to. And BTW mostly adult especially male dogs do not like puppys. I certainly hope you plan on obedience training for both dogs but especially your large dog. Your large dog will need to know all the basic obedience commands and most especially STOP!
