| So in LOVE & upset! Hi everyone! I am completely new here, but not new to loving Yorkies! 😊 I will post a picture of my new fur baby Loki as soon as I get to my computer in the morning. I'm posting to introduce us and hopefully get some advice from you guys. A little back story (in case anyone cares lol) when I was 12yrs old my father passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack, I was a very depressed and emotional child after (of course that's expected) until at 15 my mother surprised me with the most adorable bundle of pure LOVE Sebastian! He was my baby, my best friend & constant companion, he was a beautiful example of the breed and I was so in love with him I read every bit of literature I could about the Yorkshire Terrier. When I was 24 he was STOLEN from my apartment by the maintenance people, the pain was gut wrenching and soul crushing, I put up every penny I had for a reward and slept with my apartment door open for weeks (so dangerous!) In case he might run away and find his way back to me. He didn't. I never knew what happened to my sweet Soobie. When I met my husband yrs later he surprised me on our 1st anniversary with 1.5lbs of pure joy, my Ziggy! He was an amazing dog, we own our own business and he would accompany us to work every day, he loved children and would sit on my husband's shoulders like a parrot lol. One day when Ziggy was 4yrs old my neighbors rot mix came into my front yard while I was gardening & Zig laid sunning himself, the dog immediately began to bark and acted aggressive, Ziggy rushed to protect us and was bitten on his head after surgery & the loss of his eye my little boy succumbed to an infection. I always knew I would fall in love with another Yorkie, I love this breed too much! This past Christmas I received the best gift ever, my sweet little Loki! (He is the most feisty & lovable baby ever! This little guy RULES my other dogs at 12 weeks) My late babies were AKC registered and beautiful examples of the breed, I did SO much looking to find the perfect puppy (most people selling "Yorkies" here in Texas seem to be passing off mixed breed terriers as such) finally I found a breeder with the most beautiful baby in my price range, 5hrs away. She sent me photos of the parents and promised they would be on site (they are gorgeous!) We agreed on a price of $1200, that included his AKC registration, 1st shots, & microchip. I spoke to her about my previous babies and how I would like to possibly stud this pup in the future for pick of the litter if all his genetic testing clears. We made the 5hr trip and the moment I saw him I was in LOVE! I signed the bill of sale, (it said the information above) glanced over my paperwork (new puppy AKC app, shot records, etc.) I was on cloud 9, and he is the most amazing little guy, with the biggest personality ever, Im over the moon, but unfortunately have just discovered something that has made me livid with this breeder! I thought I researched her enough, she seemed so sweet! I went to online register Loki on the AKC website a few days ago and it would only let me register him as "limited" I had never even HEARD of this term before and after reading what it meant I was SO upset! I called, and called her, left multiple messages with no response. I sent her emails and finally yesterday evening she responded. She says she will lift this limited reg for an additional $400!!! I was so angry, but tried to stay calm and replied that I had specifically spoken to her about breeding him in the future, she said "well, who's stopping you?" Unbelievable. I'm so disappointed I didn't catch this, but didn't even realize LIMITED REGISTRATION was a thing! Please, lend me some advice here, I know the AKC will not get involved in these disputes (as I've read as much as I can find online about this) & the bill of sale simply states AKC REGISTERED litter#, the Dam & Sire names and numbers. Even though we are at least 2 years away from even considering breeding, no one with a quality bitch would want a litter that cannot be registered. I also want to add I'm not against this limited registration in general, I can see the benefit, but this is NOT what I was told I was purchasing & I wouldn't have driven 5hrs in the 1st place if she had been honest. if you're still reading, thanks for keeping up with my rambling venting session! Lol |

| So sad I would like to know the name of this breeder as I am currently looking for one and do not want to buy one from her. I'm so sorry that happened to you. |

| Hi sorry to hear about the hard time you are dealing with. It doesn't seem fair but maybe if you really want to breed with papers you should just give her the money and move on with your plan. We payed 1500 each for our two girls with no breeding so 1600 doesn't sound to bad even though it was a nasty way of her getting it. |

YT 500 Club Member | Yeah, I've come across several breeders that will only let you register limited. With my breeder I had to prove he was nurtured. Which was fine with me.

| Nothing to do with breeding, registration, et al, I just wanted to express my admiration for you, the love you have for your little canines and your determination to 'keep on keepin' on.' My sincere sympathy on the losses you 've suffered. I hope everything works out for you in getting new puppy and I have a feeling once he is your arms and you're looking into his precious little face, the 'fine print' stuff will fade away. All the best to you and yours! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and congrats on your new little ones. I'm so very sorry about your losses - so sad. I hope you did call the police on those people who stole your yorkie..? As far as the registration, I don't see any choice at all except to pay the extra if you want breeding rights. Don't see a way around that. I would just suggest that you *really* think long and hard about having your sweet little man become a breeder or not, rather than just live his life as a beloved pet. For me, I just want them as pets -- breeding to me is for experts only.

| Thanks for sharing your stories on your past Yorkies. I can't imagine how upset you must have been to have your first one stolen and next one attacked... I bought my Yorkies (each a year apart) from a really good breeder, with an agreement that I was purchasing a pet, so they had to be neutered/spayed. Through my experience, I'm aware of the limited AKC registration because mine are for pet ownership reasons. Nonetheless, they are still AKC registered. For your situation, as gemy mentioned, I guess it is a 'live and learn'. You technically have AKC registration, she just didn't specify that it's limited. Understanding you're upset because it was a specific price that you had agreed on...but, if it's any consolation to you, if you feel that you have purchased a quality stud for breeding, $1200+400 isn't all that much. In Vancouver, some quality Yorkies sell for as much as $3000 (and that's CAD lol). Also, as Wylie's mom mentioned, I would also strongly consider keeping him as just a pet and leave the breeding to the professional life-long dedicated breeders. When you're ready to buy another one later on, just research a good breeder again. It'll save you a lot of headache in terms of breeding properly and safely. I've read it's a lot of work. And most seem to suggest that you need a good mentor for this, someone who's spent a good many years breeding quality show dogs! Just out of pure curiosity, do you mind if I ask whether you're interested in breeding to compete in the show ring? Or are you just interested in breeding so that you don't need to look as far and hard for your next Yorkie?

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | While these next comments are appropriate to this thread. I am saddened by the number of posts threads about dubious breeder practices that we learn of on here. Saying that I want to breed is a clear intention. And implicit in this as she was buying an akc registered dog was she wanted to be able to register future litters with akc.

| I am sorry you suffered two tragic losses of your first 2 pups. Limited AKC registration with an agreement to spay/neuter is typical for pups. My boys' breeder held onto the AKC papers until after the pups were neutered. Breeding rights usually do increase the purchase price significantly. I believe AKC registration for a breeding dog costs more. Was it a contract that you signed with the breeder? The type of registration should have been indicated in the contract.
