| ![]() Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum. We brought home our little princess Paisley on 12/19. She is our first Yorkie and came from a breeder I'd never use again. I don't want to get into that now. I'm just happy she is home with us safe and sound. She's going to be 10wks old tomorrow (Monday 12/28). My question is an odd one. I've heard horror stories on the first few nights with a new puppy. It's been so long since we've had an 8wk old puppy in the house I don't remember what it was like. Paisley has done none of that. We have her gated in our dining room that's off the kitchen. It's a decent size room, rarely used, quiet and isn't carpeted. I thought she'd be gated in there once I return to work in January and at night she could be in a puppy play pen in the bedroom. She'd have access to her crate, water and pee pad in the playpen. She was rather calm in the dining room. She would cry when we walked out of sight but only for a short time. When gated in there while we ate she also cried but only for a minute or so before entertaining herself. Now. When we tried the playpen at bedtime she freaked out! The whole crying, howling, barking. I put her back in the dining room and she was fine. It's weird. She is quiet all night! I put her in the dining room when she acts tired and she'll crawl up on her doggie bed (she prefers it over the crate) and just go to sleep. At night she sleeps quietly or entertains herself quietly. And she can sleep through almost anything (i think that is due to how chaotic the breeders house was). She never slept alone before we got her. She had a brother from her litter and lots of other dogs in the house. I just got a baby monitor so I can keep an ear open for her. The bedroom is off the kitchen and I've kept the door open. She hasn't made any noise to wake me or our other dog that sleeps in bed. I know she gets up to potty at night as there will be pee or poo on the pee pads. I want to make sure I'm not missing something so that is what the monitor is for. I know I should be happy with her being content alone but with it not being the norm... I'm a little concerned. Opinions? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | ![]() Awwww...what a good little sweetie. I don't think you're missing anything here...I just think you have an innately secure little pup. Some puppies are just that way...calm, secure, no separation anxiety. It's probably just her personality...and you're lucky ![]() When my dogs were pups, I'd always make sure they had a stuffed "Momma Dog" in their Iris pen/gate -- ie, a stuffed dog about the size of their Momma. Maybe yours would like that too...? Btw, pics please ![]()

| ![]() Ok good! I feel overly protective of her. More so than when my boys were pups. Speaking of stuffed dog.....she's had one with her. Maybe that's what helps her. I'll need to break out my lap top to upload pics. I've tried but they are apparently too big. Thank you for your reply! |

| ![]() Awe she sounds sweet. Honestly, I would be thrilled that she likes her space and lets you have yours. I would agree in that she sounds very secure as most puppies would not be ok with that. It sounds like Paisley has decided that the dining room is her spot and she doesn't want to be taken from her spot. If that is where she feels most secure, I wouldn't push her for now. As she gets older, she will most likely venture into your room, but I would always encourage her to have her own space. |

| ![]() Hi Paisley's mom, congrats on your new fur baby! I was letting my Lacy have the run of the kitchen, but whenever I left the room to go elsewhere in the house, she would start crying. I had to spend many hours a day unpacking as I moved into a new home, and listening to her cry for hours was stressful. Then, I decided to put her in her iris pen in the bedroom, and she NEVER cries if I am in other areas of the house, even unpacking for a few hours, and that has saved my sanity. I guess our pups just have their preferred places where they feel comfortable. :-)

| ![]() Well Sophie was that way when we brought her home at 12 weeks and I thought Oh, the perfect puppy. Now 6 years later and knowing her better she was just too afraid to make a peep. She is very nervous and has always been. Needs routine ~nothing new at all to keep her happy. ![]()

| ![]() Paisley sounds like one little honey of a puppy. I think it's wonderful that you're very protective of her and that you're so tuned-in to her...Enjoy your precious Paisley. Looking forward to pictures! |

| ![]() BlueBelle- that is my concern. That I'm missing something because most puppies have a problem being alone. She doesn't have a problem speaking up when you put her in there and she doesn't want to be. She'll carry on until she distracts herself. I can put her in there when she's tired and she just lays down and goes to sleep. Here is a picture of Paisley in her doggie bed. |
