| Questions, Please Help! Hi guys, So I have just a couple of concerns/question about my little guy Chico (14 Weeks old) 1. I just switched him from the food his normal breeder gave him to Royal Canin Dry Food for Yorkie Puppies, I have noticed his feces are now moist and smell really bad, with his other food his feces were dry and didn't have much smell. Is this something that's normal because of the transition in food, or is something else up? 2. My other question is that he has been Great in peeing only in his Pee area as I cannot take him outside right now as advised by the Vet, but now all of a sudden he's just letting it go anywhere he pleases. Is this something to be concerned about, or Is this normal for puppies to lose their training? I really appreciate all feedback guys! Last edited by Torguy; 12-04-2015 at 11:48 PM. |

I also forgot to add that he could be playing with his bone and then suddenly there is pee everywhere, as in he doesn't lift his leg and make an effort to actually go pee as far as I can tell. | |

YT 500 Club Member | Well I know never to just switch their food without making it a slow transition so it doesn't upset their system. I'll let the next visitor tackle the specifics on the rest. WELCOME!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | What was the former food and why did you switch? If I had the nice, drier, small, harder poos...I probably wouldn't be switching if it were me. I do find that higher carb/corn/grain diets do definitely result in more voluminous smellier and softer poos. Do you want to switch back to the previous food or...? As for peeing, did you open up his "area" as compared to whatever it was before, bc that can def confuse them. Potty training is a long process w/ ebbs and flows...it can be frustrating and confusing, but hang in there.

| I have fed RC for 35+ years to all my dogs, with excellent results.....well tolerated, mostly all digested, smaller, firmer stools with very little odor. However, I am never a fan of changing what the baby is on, especially if baby is eating well! I would have left baby on what he was on, until 8 months old or there abouts....then slowly switch over to what you want to feed. As far as peeing goes.....a 14 week old baby does not lift his leg to pee.....he will still be squatting to pee......and just like a kid, your baby gets all engrossed in his play activity, he pees in his pants because he does not want to stop and go do that! Potty training is quite an event and can take quite a long time....just be consistant, persistant, and diligent! |

| I agree with Yorkiemom1 and Wylie's Mom on the peeing, if you have given him more freedom, opened a new area for him to roam and play in, they get distracted, excited, engrossed in playing or checking out new area, they forget where they are supposed to potty. As for switching his food, this transition must be done slow, over a period of a week so as to not upset their digestive system. Mix a small amount of new food with his old food, each day increase the amount of new food mixed in with his old food. At 14 weeks old they are not eating a large amount of food, so the new food has to be in very small amounts. Keep increasing each day until he is on only the new food. This should be done over a period of at least 7 days so it does not up set his digestive system. This is how you switch food no matter how old the dog is. My boy is 4 y/o, I do a 10 day transition, not because he has a sensitive digestive system, it's just what I do.

YT 1000 Club Member | At 14 weeks old a male puppy should not lift their leg. I have heard that some do, but in my experience none of mine lifted a leg until they were about 6 months or older. I had my male puppy fixed the day after he turned 6 months and at 9 months he still does not lift his leg, which is preferable to me because I like for him to lean forward to pee. I have a 6 year old male dog (80 lbs) who does not lift his leg. I hope my male puppy never does start lifting. I asked people on here before I got my puppies and was advised that I should not switch their puppy food and I took their advice and I am so happy that I did! They eat well and are extremely healthy puppies with no stomach problems. Even though it is not the food I wanted them on, I am glad I did not switch. I am on their last bag of puppy food though and it should last about 6 weeks. Then I will be switching them to the food that I want to have them on doing a slow switch. I would definitely consider going back to the original food they were on, as a slow switch if you did a slow switch to this new food, and if you just switched them to this food, I think I would just switch them back to what they were on from the breeder. It is terribly upsetting for a puppy's food to be changed. As far as potty training. My puppies were so not even close to being potty trained at that age. It wasn't until about 5 months old they were somewhat potty trained. At 6 months they were sort of potty trained. At 7 months they were partially potty trained. At 8 months mostly potty trained and now at 9 months we only have a few accidents here and there.

| So guys thanks again for the advise, but I have another big concern in relation to this topic. I have taken your advise and put back his old food today, However, ever since I switched him to Royal Canin food, Literally this morning I noticed he is heavier!! I would guess a couple of lbs, he was weighing 2.5 and hes 14 weeks now. His whole stomach and bones seem much thicker, but I am worried because this is just overnight this happened, I go to see him in the morning and hes suddenly somewhat chubbier. I did the whole "Rib Test" for checking weight and I can feel his ribs so I just don't know what to make of this. One last note is that I noticed on the Royal Canin food it states "Rapid Growth", and I am just really untrusting when companies put that because even though they claim its 'Natural', I fear they use chemicals to force growth dogs, whats your guys take on this?
