| Is this true? I was at Petsmart and I was talking to a couple wth their 2 yorkies with them. We got into a conversation about their coats. Anyway, they were telling me to wait til my yorkie is 2 years old before i get his haircut, because the black hair will turn silver when it grows back out, if i cut it too soon. Is this true? Or is color based on genetics? |

| Hmmm, I have never heard that before. I will be interested in reading more posts on this subject. If this is true then that would mean that Schatzie will have a grey hair'd hip since it was shaved prior to her surgery. And ya wanna know what? It's growing back silver, hahahahaaa. So, she will look patchy then I guess. Heck, to be honest with you, I wouldn't care if she turned pink and purple as Id love her just the same !

| hmmmm! I think alot is common sense, don't you? How could cutting hair change the color? If that was true wouldn't the world be filled with nothing but silver Yorkies. Most of us cut the hair before two yr..I do not shave them to the skin, even that wouldn't effect the genetic preponent as to what the adult color will be. |

| The color of the hair is determined by markers in the pores. There was a great link posted somewhere on this site that explained yorkie coloring in detail that was awesome. The color is predetermined.

| Color is genetics...cutting or not does not make a difference. Refer to the parents and generations before to have a good idea of what your yorkie will look like. |

| All new to me I have not heard this before either, until yesterday. The reason I asked, is because their yorkie had silver body hair, and their reason was, they cut the hair while the yorkie was still young? Plus i'm new at this yorkie stuff. People tell me different stuff all the time and i just wanted some feedback from some experienced yorkie owners. Thanks |

| This probably doesn't relate much but my Mom had to have her head shaved for some brain surgery. Well, when her hair grew back it came back silver, thicker, and wavy?? Previously she had straight brown hair.

| Hee hee .........so not true! Ive heard their coats arent mature until 2 yrs old, meaning the color changes should be permanent then but the cutting hair thing is kinda silly! |

| The coat color is determined by genetics. I had Mia's puppy coat cut off when she was about 7 or 8 months old. Here's a pic with her coat at about 18 months of age. She has a dark steel blue coat. http://www.yorkietalk.com/gallery/sh...cat/500/page/1

| Most yorkies I see DO have a silver coat. We had 5 yorkies growing up, all 5 had silver and light tan coats. They looked alot like Silky Terriers. When I got my 2 pups this time, I looked at the parents, older siblings and they are still black and gold. The breeder says when mature, they will be steel blue an gold, not the silver like many yorkies I see. |

| I was reading on a yorkie judge's comments that she says she wears a watch with a black band on it so that she can use it to judge whether yorkies are black or the desired dark blue color. It also matters what age category she is judging since pups can be any range of color (meaning more black than blue) while they are still changing.

| Thanks for all your input, this site has helped me out alot, since i've had my yorkie. The sad part about this is, the couple who gave me this fictitious info, is breeding their yorkies for the first time, and it is worries me that they might be giving wrong information to their buyers, when they sell their pups. |
