| My Yorkie Is Hiding His Poop My yorkie was born 5/14/15 he has been hiding his poop under his peed pad the last few days lol I dont know why he does this. Im thinking maybe its because i pick it up and flush it down the toilette so he doesn't step on it but I dont know. Does anyone elses puppy do this? I dont like him doing this cause then I have to wash his paws. |

YT 1000 Club Member | Welcome! Your puppy has my birthday!!!!! How do you react when he poops on the pad? I got 2 puppies in May, so my pups are about 2 months older than him. When mine pee or poop on the pad I praise them and tell them they are good puppies. When they poop on the pad I leave it sitting there for a little bit and tell them they are good. Then after anywhere from 5 minutes to a few hours later I pick up the poop and flush it. By having it sit there sometimes they see that it is a good thing. I do try to pick it up within 20 minutes usually, but sometimes all the doggies decide to lay down and sleep so I just get it later as they are usually piled on me. Make sure you praise well when they go on the pad. Remove it after they have walked away and are not paying any attention. I have heard of dogs that will start hiding where they potty if they think their owner is unhappy with them going in the house, which is why I praise when they use the pee pad. If mine go other than the pee pad, I will soak up urine with the pee pad and then put the pad where it normally goes or I will set the poop onto the pee pad and leave it there for a little while before disposing of it. I hope this helps.

| Oh Wow, so cool! lol. You know it makes sense he got in trouble for peeing in the living room a couple days ago, we made it known we were upset. Ever since that happened a couple days ago that's when he started hiding his poop. Yesterday when we got home he even folded his puppy pad in 3 lol, and I do praise him everytime he goes on the pad I tell him good boy a few times and give him kisses and I let him out his play penn. I put him in his play penn every hour and tell him go potty. Sometimes he goes on his own while he is out and that's when I give him a treat. I feel bad I told him No! this morning cause he hid his poop under his puppy pad and some how got poop smeared on the other side of his play pen? That I didn't understand it seems to me like he might be marking his territory. But I don't want to confuse him so I decided I shouldn't tell him no anymore. |

YT 1000 Club Member | I either don't say anything if they have an accident and just clean it up (using the pee pad to clean it up so the smell is on that) or I just very calmly say "We got potty on the pad, not on the carpet." I have 2 puppies and oh my gosh when we brought them home I swear I cleaned up accidents about 30 times a day. I praised when they went on the potty pad and now I clean up a few accidents a week between the 2 of them. Ignoring them having an accident is working well for mine and praising like crazy when they go outside or on the pad seems to be working. Good luck. I hope this behavior goes away soon. My puppies are 2 months older than your puppy and they are going really good on potty training. When it is just me and them during the day (hubby at work and kids at school) I typically have 1 accident a week with them. After the kids get home from school and hubby is here in the evening they have more, a few a week. I don't know if it is because there are more people, more commotion for them or if it is me being so distracted by other things that I don't take them outside as often.

| Oh Thank you JadeD, you've been very helpful. My boyfriend does clean up the pee with the puppy pad I always forget but I should make a point to remember because it would help him learn. Thanks a lot for your help. |

| I agree with JadeD's excellent advice. My boys are 6 and 7 and we still praise when they use the pads. We act like they have done the best thing ever! My boys are a little different in that they like to see me take care of the poop right away. They like being part of the process, walking along with me. I agree with JadeD about never being upset about accidents. At most, say calmly, "Uh oh" and then just clean it up. When Teddy has been sick and needs to be cleaned up, he always feels soooo bad. I reassure him that it is okay and I just want him to feel better, so now he comes to me to be cleaned up. How cute that your puppy folded the piddle pad! Max did that when he was a puppy. I think it is also instinct because animals know that other animals/predators can be attracted to the scent. It can also be a general instinct to keep their living space clean, like dogs generally do with a crate.

| Zoey is almost six yrs and we still make a BIG deal when she poops on the pad. She runs to us all excited and looks at her butt. I say, "did you go poo poo? Let me see." Then I immediately go pick it up and flush it. We don't have accidents. She is just so pleased with herself for doing the right thing. Praise is the answer I think.

YT 1000 Club Member | My dogs only eat Cat Truffles (poop) so I can leave their poop out and they don't touch it (I have 4 dogs). My older Yorkie is 9 and he sometimes chokes like he has a hairball in his throat and occasionally it causes him to throw up. I will run over to him and rub his back while he is hacking and even throw up. He will look at me like I am going to hit him when he throws up and I just talk softly to him and tell him it is okay and no big deal and I clean it up all the while talking to him and rubbing his back. I wish he wouldn't feel this way. I have only had him for 8 months and I would never hit him for anything. I don't hit him when he knocks over the garbage can and spreads it all over the house. I might sternly tell him that I am not impressed, but never hit him. I feel so terrible when he acts like I am going to hit him for something he has done. I don't know if it is something from his past or if he just feels terrible for throwing up on my floor that he acts that way though. Some things dogs do, I think it is instinct to not be happy about having done it, like throwing up. My previous dog had cancer and she would throw up a lot the last few months she was alive. She would act like it was the end of the world and I would be rubbing her back the entire time trying to comfort her. I really learned a lot from her in the few short years I had her. I rarely even raise my voice at my Yorkies. I believe in praising them when they do well. Ignoring/distracting unwanted behaviors. I will tell them to HUSH loudly when they are barking but only loudly because they have to hear me over the barking.
