This is one of the reasons I don't like free feeding - if food is always available dogs often can turn up fussy noses at it.

And if he is not skinny and a good weight maybe he is eating enough for his frame and metabolism. We have a good thread somewhere here on what an in shape dog looks like - but basically from above looking down on your dog you should be able to see his *waist*. In touching him ribs should be easily felt - but not really visible (except for a few certain breeds). Muscles should feel toned and easily palpable

I don't know how much your boy weighs mine weighs as an adult 6-61/4 pounds. He gets a little more than 1/2 c of raw a day - plus training treats. It is only on our most active days he would get a cup or a cup and 1/2.

These are all things I have heard on here - I have been blessed with healthy eaters who would never think to turn up a nose at food! I know my dogs are unwell when they turn down food!
Thanks for the info. Bruiser is just turned a year this week. He's on the smaller side of a full grown yorkie. His dame and sire were both over 6# one was 7# (I think if I remember the sire was 7 and change.) bruiser isn't anywhere near the height and bulk of either of them. He was the biggest of his litter and the only male. Bruiser is 4.5 lbs. He looks skinny but not unhealthy. His waist is very predominant, especially after a shave. But no ribs protruding. I took him in over a UTI a few weeks ago, the vet mentioned kinda in passing that he's a little too skinny. But the big concern at the time was his UTI so we didn't really address his weight.

If I give him wet food as a treat or snack he will refuse his kibble. So I stopped buying the wet. Except for special occasions (trip to the vet or groomers).

I've tried doctoring with chicken broth or putting shredded cheese in his bowl mixed in with the kibble. He'll attack the bowl, get the goodies out and ignore the rest.

He's always been a picky eater. I think I should have names him Fin instead. (short for finicky. ;-)

In case it helps, as a pup he was on science diet puppy, then switched to RC puppy per recommendation on YT. He never touched the RC so I tried Wellness Complete puppy. And about two months ago I started mixing it with Wellness Core Small Breed. He's fully on WC now.

He eats it. I don't do people food or scraps, but I have seen him steal a potato chip out of someone's hand and eat a small piece of a deli sandwich from the same person. (Pool party, friend was reprimanded. Why do people assume they can feed a dog people food when it isn't even their dog!?!) other than that he'll hang out in the kitchen while I'm cooking praying for me to drop something.

I'm adamant against feeding table food. But like I said, I'll slip him cheese after shots ( he won't eat for a day after his shots) or as a rare treat. He does need to bulk up though.

My pups almost always get veggie treats when I am cooking. But of course I feed raw and not kibble.

My pups always get veggie treats when I am slicing n dicing our dinner. And they get some meat treats usually specially prepared for them. But then again I feed raw and not kibble.

they don't get desserts ham or bacon - they don't get candy etc.

If you are into it think about raw or precooked after consultation with your vet. With a wee one it really is not too onerous or expensive to cook or buy raw for a cup a day eater.

We free fed Zeus (on the vet's advice) when he was a tiny puppy because he was so small. After the fear of hypoglycemia was over, he started eating until he puked. He now gets a 1/4 cup of food in the morning and 1/4 cup of food in the evening (we include for treats). He weighs about 3.7 pounds.

I was amazed when you said that Bruiser was supposed to get 1 1/2 cups of food a day, according to the package. I thought Bruiser was about 15 lbs.
After reading that Bruiser is 4.5 lbs, I ran to look at my dog food bag again to see if I was starving my babies. I feed Elliot 1/2 c. a day (she is 4 lbs.) and Duncan (he is 11 lbs.) 2/3 c. a day. But no, according to the bag, that is what they are supposed to be eating. Neither one is skinny, in fact, I am starting to think Duncan is getting a little too much weight on him after looking at that chart someone suggested.

I am surprised at how different the amounts of dog food you feed a dog is, according to the dog food you buy.

I used the dog food calculator. I think it depends on what brand of food. WC has 396 cal/cup. It's grain free, so I guess the assumption is because it's just power that he's getting, he needs more for calorie intake. I don't know. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. I posted pictures. What do you think?

I feed my dogs grain free food also. I feed them what the bag says to feed their weight: 1/4 - 1/2 c. a day for 0-5 lbs.; 3/4 - 1 1/4 c. for 10 - 20 lbs. I just checked the bag. Their food has 416Kcal/cup.

I didn't check it on a dog food calculator. Duncan seemed to be gaining enough weight and Elliot doesn't seem to be overly hungry so I figured they were getting the correct amount of food.

I looked at the pictures you posted of Bruiser. To me, he does look thin in the pictures but then, I am used to Duncan who is almost 12 lbs. Elliot is 4 lbs. but she is pretty small; her legs are half the size, maybe smaller of Bruiser's legs.

I always treated my dogs like kids. If they were hungry, they would let us know. If they didn't want to eat anymore, they were full.

Wow! I'm jealous! I can't get Bruiser anywhere near the water. I've taken him several times. And even gently placed him in about knee deep. He paddled out and wouldn't let me pick him the rest of the time were there. Lola looks a little nervous but she'll still get in. Kudos!

Again.....Thank you all
I spoke to my friend, she is going to free feed instead of doing the 5 times a day. I did suggest the kong toy for kibbles, thanks for reminding me about the dish that slows down the eating, I'll tell her about that. Best yet, she is going to use a different vet, she has an appointment this Friday. Again, Thank you.

I saw the pics of your baby, he looks perfect to me, not skinny. If you can feel his ribs and back bone protruding then he is skinny. Looking down at your dog they should have an hour glass shape, this was told to me by my vet. I like lean dogs, not over weight dogs, I want my breed to look like the breed it is.

I free feed my yorkies and biewers once they're house or potty pad trained. Puppies are given as much as they want 3-4 times a day. My dogs are all a nice weight.
