Terrified of my aunt's puppy My aunt just got a westie puppy, she's 9 weeks, 4-5lbs, and so sweet and sassy. Lola is 2 years old and 7-8lbs, she hasn't had much dog contact except brief meetings in petstores, she loves to greet the other dogs and then walk away. I took Lola to my aunt's house to meet the puppy and Lola is terrified of her, the puppy was chaseing her and Lola ran with her ears and tail down then flopped on her back and shook when the puppy caught her. I tried sitting on the floor with Lola in my arms and let the puppy sniff her, she tried to climb my shoulder, so I held the puppy and Lola ran to my mom. What can I do? I don't want Lola to have fear issues and it would be good for her to get along with the puppy incase my aunt watches her or I watch the puppy, we also go over there for holidays and stuff. My aunt is bringing the puppy over tomorrow.

This will take time for Lola to get used to and accept the puppy. Puppies are extremely friendly and can overwhelm an older dog even as young as 2 years. If the puppy were yours and they saw each other on a daily basis and you were with Lola and the puppy and petted and loved on Lola and the puppy together and they slowly got used to each other one day Lola would just accept the new little one. I say this from just a little experience I have had in much the same way but both were my own dog. I don't know how possible it is for the two of them to see a lot of each other but I think this is the best and only way for them to become friends. This is just my opinion of course as I am hardly an expert. Best of luck with getting the two of them acquainted and becoming friends. Last edited by Silver Lace; 06-17-2015 at 04:00 PM.

| It might take a little time. Puppies can be rough and there nails and teeth can be really sharp.

This was also my personal experience when I had my 3 pack all 3 years apart, older dogs are afraid of puppies, 1-they smell different. 2-puppies are hyper, pounce and nip the older dogs, I had to laugh when reading this, remembering the times I would bring a new baby home, the reactions I had from my first 3 y/o meeting her new sister, then bringing the 3rd home 3 years later and the reaction from the two older ones lol. but they lived together and the older ones had no choice but to accept the new ones. I suggest bringing Lola over to your aunts as much as possible so Lola can get use to her, as the puppy gets older it will get calmer, let Lola get to know this puppy.

Thanks everyone The puppy was very nice with Lola, she just wanted to run around with her, she didn't try to bite or scratch. Lola just didn't want any part of it. I'm not sure how often we'll be able to get them together.

They'll probably figure it out themselves with a little give and take; and a few missteps here and there. I'll bet they're fun to watch when they're getting along better!

My yorkie had the same reaction to my cat when they first met. That all changed over time though. I think it will take a little time. If they have regular interaction, the fear and submissiveness will probably subside.
