| Why are bigger dogs trying to hurt my Yorkie? My problem is that when i take my two Yorkie's Ruby (1 year old) and Bella (5 months old) to the dog park bigger dogs are completely fine with Ruby but always try to hurt Bella Bella is very girlie and doesn't really like to go for walks while Ruby loves her walks. Well on warm days i bring Bella along on our walks and all the bigger dogs always come over straight to Bella and poke her with their nose and then try to put their foot on her back and squish her into the ground but they leave Ruby completely alone and even try to play with Ruby!? It scares me to death so i always pick Bella up or just leave her at home. Ruby is around 5 lbs and Bella is around 3lbs so there isn't very much size difference between my two girls, so why do bigger dogs always go after Bella and try to hurt her? Bella is pretty quiet and very friendly but now she's really scared of dog's who aren't Yorkie's or her size. Boy dogs will even try to mount her and that is just getting too dangerous for her due to her size and age so i have been leaving Bella at home or bringing her in her bag (which she loves), But they don't try to mount Ruby and are completely fine with her Any suggestions would be great?

| Whoa, you need to be very careful here as all it takes is one bounce on your babies back and she will be dead. I am not an advocate of bringing these little dudes to dog parks or even letting strange dogs walk up to my little ones. In a larger dogs mind they might view her as a rodent and with one bite try to kill her. I also think dog parks carry a lot of disease but each person has to make their own decision of this.

| I no longer walk her in the dog park because of this. It happened once and i scooped Bella up and just thought it was that dog and then it happened a few more times (different days with different dogs) and now i either bring her in her bag and don't let her down or leave her at home. I know how dangerous this is and that's why I don't put Bella in a situation like that anymore but i do want her to be social with other dogs and not just have to be confined to the sidewalk. I want to be able to let Bella enjoy any kind of park like Ruby does without having to worry about other peoples dogs. My dogs are always on leash and i never let them just go up to any strange dog because I also am very aware about disease but i'm also not going to keep my dog's in a bubble either. I have never had this problem with Ruby and she has met quite a few friends there. I just wanted to know if anyone knew why dogs acted this way with Bella and not Ruby? The only thing i can think of is that Bella is still young and they might sense that.

| Sad thing not all dogs are as well behave as ours. I have only been to a dog park once and my three had a great time. Polly my small one I held most of the time, there was a little male yorkie that tried to ride every thing and the parents thought it was funny. Polly was fine she loves to be held and Rudy and Maddie were having a great time. Wish I had a dog park in my town, we have to go to Houston.

| Cindy is right. There are times that it is tempting to treat our little ones like a BIG dog and let them mix it up with the big boys. But it is NOT a good idea. These little dogs are fragile. A friend of mine had her 5 lb Yorkie killed by a Golden Retriever that had never been aggressive with anyone before. It happens, and unfortunately, it happens OFTEN. This message board documents plenty of these incidents. I have resolved never to take a chance again. |
