| For the dog owners that do this...The punishment should be sitting in a hot car for an hour with the windows up... And no air.

| I think if more people were to break windows to save pets maybe it would get people to open there eyes and stop doing it. Prescriptions can be dropped off at one of the million pharmacy's with a drive-thru. If you need a coke or a bottle of water most liquor stores with a drive-thru will sell you that or you can take your dog with you to a machine. I don't think there is any reason to leave your dog in the car and in the 70's in my opinion it's to hot. I think we need better laws in almost everything that has to do with our beloved dogs and this is one of those areas we need better laws. We need signs in parking lots that say don't do it, we need fines, we need a number on those signs to call. Not everyone knows what to do when they see a dog locked in a hot car.

I have sat in the car, all windows up before on a 70 degree day and was perfectly fine for at least 30 minutes in a shady spot. My only point is that YES by all means save a dog in true distress but other measures should be taken first before busting open someones window. If someone did that to my car while I ran into 711 for 2 minutes to grab something, Jackson would likely bite if tried to be picked up, or run away and possibly into traffic. Are there idiot owners out there who simply... don't care? Yep. And it sucks. I have called the cops before when a friend and I were in the mall parking lot eating with our dogs in our car and we saw a dog in a car on a pretty hot day for at LEAST 30-40 mins. To me that's just plain stupid. I would never ever leave Jackson in a car to run into a mall, or a grocery store, or anything where I couldn't see him through the windows or knew I was going to be longer than 5 mins. But those of us who are responsible dog owners shouldn't be punished because of certain idiots. And I know it's a fine line, it's hard to be so black/white, because I get it. I do. It's better to be proactive than not caring. But if you see a dog in a car, just WAIT, think, before calling police or busting open windows and ask yourself the questions that I posted in my last post.

| Test say "The temperature inside your vehicle can rise almost 20º F in just 10 minutes. In 20 minutes, it can rise almost 30º F...and the longer you wait, the higher it goes. At 60 minutes, the temperature in your vehicle can be more than 40 degrees higher than the outside temperature. Even on a 70-degree day, that's 110 degrees inside your vehicle!" So other then in an out for one minute its to much. But I'm the tpye of person who just doesn't did . What happens if I get stuck in the store?? For whatever reason. But I'm the same type of person who wouldn't leave my young daughter in the car unattended. Theres ppl who will do it all the time and even think less of a dog. If I need to go into the store I usually just carry my dogs. |

| Oh meant to add too a lot of cars have a remote starter now a days. I borrow my moms car sometimes and she has one so I can actually leave the car running w/ AC and still it locked and keys with me. But I know stealing has become an issue as well so do understand that is a risk. And again I don't necessarily mind those warnings though for the average folks who may not be so dog savvy. There ARE idiots out there who would leave their dogs in a car on a 100 degree day for 2 hours. Or not pay any attention at all to if a dog is over-heating by being outside too long, etc. But again just relaying the 'other side'.

I am not sure there is an "other side" to this thread because I believe the rants here are directed at those "idiots" who leave their dog in a car on a hot day. The story that started this was one of those people. She said she was only gone 5 minutes but all the witnesses said it was a lot longer. She was probably getting her nails done while her dog was roasting. Responsible people like yourself would not do that, but there are boneheads who would. I agree with you that common sense must be used before breaking someone's window but once it has been established that an animal could be in grave danger - find me a brick. I am fortunate to have a remote starter and there has probably been 3 times that I have left Max and/or Sasha in the car. Not only were they comfy in the car (winter or summer) but I NEVER let them out of my line of sight. I am more afraid of someone trying to steal them!

| My rare experience with this (3 times) -- I call 911 and every time they have immediately dispatched an officer who broke the window or opened the car door and then waited for the owners to come to the car. Although the windows got broken I was not the one who actually did it. Cop out (pun intended) but it worked . I was standing there with 2 bottles of water when the dog was rescued!!!!!!Sooo, I wonder how this situation would have played out if he had call the police first? Might be a piece of self-protection.
